Bizarre.
Obviously these four *infants* were contracted to each other from a
rather peculiarly young age. Roger, the elder of the two sons was
only "aged 7 and more" in 1326 so apparently here we are looking at
contractual statements of the marriage from the age of perhaps 4 or 5
for him, and a year or more younger for Thomas and Margaret the
younger!

Weird how the examples pop up just as we're discussing the situation
in another thread.

and the heirs of their bodies, remainder to the heirs of John de
Heriz, retaining the manor of Wingfield"

(PRO C 143/178/5, dated 17 Edward II, ie 1323-1324)

Indeed.

It would be nice to know how John Heriz fitted in to this picture.

We can add a few *tentative* notes, based on the material contained in
the article "The Folville and Beler Tomb at Ashby Folville [etc]",
Leicestershire & Rutland Notes and Queries, vol. i, 1891, p 77 et seq.

This alleges the following ascent for Ralph, the great grandfather of
the elder Sir Roger de Belers (p 83):

a. Hamon de Belers
b. Sampson de Belers
c. Ralph - to be equated with the following:

1. Ralph de Belers, named in his great-grandson's foundation of the
chantry chapel at Kirby Bellars

2. Roger de Belers, sheriff of Lincs, 1255-1256 (ODNB, sub Roger
Beler); issue:

3. William de Belers, married Amice (ODNB); issue:

4a. Sir Roger de Belers, killed at Rearsby, 19 January 1326
married Alice, died 23 October 1368

She is said to be the daughter of "William, son of Peter de Wakebrugge
and Juliana his wife, the sister of Hubert fitz Ralph of Crich".

Sir Roger is said to have had an effigy-tomb at Crich church.

Before we take this too seriously without any confirmation, the
article also avers that Hamon de Belers was the son of Nigel de Albini
and Gundreda, the "great granddaughter of William I".

The Belers family are ancestral to the Cromwells (Amice de Belers

Here is a first draft of their pedigree:

1. Ralph de Belers, named in his great-grandson's foundation of the
chantry chapel at Kirby Bellars, where prayers were to be said for the
founder and his ancestors William, Roger and Ralph ('The Norman People
and Their Existing Descendants in the British Dominions' (1874), p

A slightly different reference to the foundation refers to the
founders parents, grandfather Roger (following) and grandmother Amice
(who we may hadd as a wife of Roger) and "Ralph Belers of Kettleby".

Accordingly, I am now doubtful that Sir Roger Beler's great
grandfather was named Ralph Belers, since the one of that name in the
foundation may be the contemporary cousin of the name who was ancestor
to the Kettleby Belers.

2. Roger de Belers, sheriff of Lincs, 1255-1256 (ODNB, sub Roger
Beler); issue:

4b. Ralph de Belers, cleric (PRO E 326/399)

We can piece together some details of Ralph's career. He was born in
about 1297, and in 1318 was described as "Ralph Beler, acolyte, of
Kirby" when he was presented as Rector of Humberston(e). A papal
dispensation was obtained in 1322 in relation to this irregular
presentation, at the request of Thomas, Earl of Lancaster. It seems
that even before he acquired Humberston(e), he held two thirds of the
rectory of Clipston, Northants. Ralph resigned Humberston(e) in 1323,
but was re-instituted the following year, by which time he had been
priested and could probably properly serve the cure.

It seems that Mary married Sir John Saint Clere shortly *after* the
death of Sir Roger de Belers:

"Licence for 40 shillings paid to the King by Robert Swillington,
knight, for John Seytncler, knight, and Mary his wife, tenant for the
life of the latter, to the said Robert, Margaret his wife, daughter
and heiress of Roger de Belers, knight, deceased, and the heirs of the
said Margaret, of the manor of Cruch and the hundred of Framelond,
held in chief, which they hold as dower of Mary of the inheritance of
the said Margaret"
