Clifton/Glapton of Clifton, Notts

As a New Year's gift to the group in 2000, Rosie Bevan kindly
abstracted the pedigree of the Clifton family from Bentham's
Baronetage (1801), noting that it was not necessarily reliable - much
of Bentham's work is speculative and unreferenced.

I have a few Clifton 'bits and pieces' and wondered whether it would
be productive to see how much of this pedigree can be confirmed or
reconstructed on the basis of primary material.

Here is the early part of the pedigree from Bentham, as summarised by
Rosie:

1. Alveredus de Clifton living in the time of William Peverel

2. Robert de Clifton

3.Gervase married Ysmenia temp Hen II

4 Gervase married the daughter of Robert de Alvedeley.

5. Sir Gervase (d 1324) married Amflicia Sampson
It was he who purchased the Manors of Clifton and Wilford, Notts and
Broughton Sulney from John de Soleni; High Sheriff of Notts and
Derbys, 1279 - 1286 and Sheriff of Yorks, 1286 - 1292.

6.Gervase of Glapton (d 1316 before his father) married Alice,
daughter of Robert de Rabacy

7. Sir Robert, knight (d 1327) married Emma, daughter of Sir William
Moton

8.Sir Gervase Clifton, knight, married Margaret Pierpont.
Sheriff of Notts and Derbys in 1344

9.Robert (predeceased father) married Agnes de Grey

(to be continued)

Cecilia de Cressi, daughter of Gervase de Clifton, then deceased,
named in a charter dated to "c1180-1190?", also witnessed by her
brother, Gervase de Clifton (Royal Commission on Historical
Manuscripts, vol 44, 1902, p 290)

4 Gervase married the daughter of Robert de Alvedeley.

5. Sir Gervase (d 1324) married Amflicia Sampson

Custody of the sequestration in the church of Wyleford committed to
John, son of Gervase de Clifton, clerk, 1297 (Registers of John le
Romeyn and Henry de Newark, Archbishops of York, 1286-1299, p 233) NB
It is unclear whether this John, a clergyman, was the brother or the
son of Sir Gervase de Clifton; he was apparently of age by 1297.

Gervase de Clifton, knight, permitted to collect the fruits of the
church of Clifton, 19 August 1308 (Registers of Thomas of Corbridge,
Archbishop of York, 1300-1304, p 242)

Gervase de Clifton, knight, lord of Clifton, sued Robert Germayn of
Glapton in respect of a debt of 20 pounds, 29 December 1308 (PRO C
241/62/65)

6.Gervase of Glapton (d 1316 before his father) married Alice,
daughter of Robert de Rabacy

IPM for Robert de Rabercy of Glapton, Notts: 15 Edward I (PRO C
133/46/9)

7. Sir Robert, knight (d 1327) married Emma, daughter of Sir William
Moton

Robert de Clifton, kinsman and heir of Gervase de Clifton, lord of
Wileford, Notts (Calendar of Close Rolls, 10 March 1327)

8.Sir Gervase Clifton, knight, married Margaret Pierpont.
Sheriff of Notts and Derbys in 1344

Gervase de Clifton, knight, and *Isabella* his wife, of the diocese of
York, granted a papal indult for a confessor, 1355 (Calendar of
Entries in the Papal Registers relating to Great Britain & Ireland:
Papal Letters, vol III, p 552)

9.Robert (predeceased father) married Agnes de Grey

Part of the problem in effecting such a reconstruction is the
repetition of Christian names in succeeding generations of the family.

It is unclear where the individuals named in the following documents
belong in the pedigree:

"17 November 1331: licence for Joan, daughter of Gervase de
Glapton(*), to grant that the moiety of a messuage and three bovates
of land in Glapton, Notts, held in chief, which after the death of
Gervase de Glapton would come to her and her heirs, shall remain to
John, son of Gervase de Glapton, Amflesia his wife, and the heirs of
their bodies, or in default, to his right heirs; by a fine of half a
mark" (Calendar of Patent Rolls, Edward III, vol 2, p 215; also at PRO
C 143/313/10)

(*) Glapton is a location within the parish of Clifton, and it appears
that the two toponyms were used interchangeably for the family

Given that he was then married to Amphlesia, it would seem that this
'John, son of Gervase de Clifton' (ff 1331) is different to 'John, son
of Gervase de Clifton, clerk' (ff 1297).

According to 'Collectanea Topographica et Genealogica', 1837, p 199,
this Amphlesia was the mother of Agnes, wife successively to William
Fauvell [dead by 1350] and Aucher de Frecheville:

"Amphlesia, who was the wife of John de Glaptone, held of the King in
chief in the fee of Peveril, a moiety of a messuage and three bovates
of land in Glapton"

"[Her daughter] Agnes, formerly wife of William Fauvell, married now
to Aucher de Frescheville: Esc 24 Edward III n 3"

"Aucher de Frecheville and Agnes his wife, formerly wife of William
Fauvell, and heiress of Amflesia who was wife of John, son of Gervase
de Glapton: Notts: 24 June 26 Edward III"

There were, according to Betham, four successive Gervases, viz:

a. Gervase, married Ysmenia temps Henry II [r 1154-1189]
b. Gervase, married the daughter of Robert de Alvedely
c. Sir Gervase (d 1324), married Amflicia Sampson
d. Gervase, ovp, married Alice, daughter of Robert de Rabacy

We know from his IPM that Robert de Rabacy died circa 1286, which
means that Alice wife of Gerard (IV) de Clifton must have been born no
later than 1287.

We also know from a further IPM that Gervase de Frechville, younger
son of Agnes and Aucher - and grandson of Amphlesia - was aged "30 and
more" in 4 Henry V (1416-7), and thus born before 1387.

Incidentally, the use of the name 'Gervase' in the Frecheville family
is a good indication that Agnes was the daughter of John de Glapton.

A good summary of the early Cliftons was written by A.C. Wood and
published by the Thoroton Society in 1933. It may be seen here:

6.Gervase of Glapton (d 1316 before his father) married Alice,
daughter of Robert de Rabacy

According to Moor's 'Knights of Edward I', the IPM for Sir Robert de
Rabacy (c1287) stated that his daughters and coheirs were Margery,
aged 30, and Alice, aged 25.

This would furnish an approximate birthdate for Alice de Glapton nee
de Rabacy of circa 1261.

7. Sir Robert, knight (d 1327) married Emma, daughter of Sir William
Moton

According to A.C. Wood, his grandfather's IPM of 1323 stated that
Robert was then aged 26 - i.e. born circa 1297.
