Will Johnson steered me into a very interesting search. According to DNB Aurelian is the son of John Townshend of Dereham Abbey, and great-grandson of Sir Roger Townshend of Raynham.
Now the question is, which Sir Roger, and what is the name of Sir Roger's son who fathered John the father of Aurelian.
In my system I have
John Townshend
father of
Sir Roger Townshend, of Raynham, died in 1493, married Eleanor Lunsford (Gerald Paget marked these as ancestors of Prince Charles)
they were the parents of
Thomasine wife of Sir Thomas Wodehouse (also ancestors of Prince Charles), and
Sir Roger Townshend, of Raynsham, died 25 November 1551, married Amy de Brewse
they had six sons and two (unnamed in BP 1938) daughters, three sons are only mentioned as "with three other sons"
this leaves us with
1.John of Brampton, Suffolk "his eldest son" Richard of Brampton
2.Sir Roger, Lord Chief Justice of Chester, and had "an eldest son" Thomas of Mergate Hall
3.Thomas of Testerton married twice but no indication of children
And so I wonder, how does Aurelian fit into this family? Does anyone know?
With many thanks

Re: Aurelian Townshend
He is in DNB and Oxford University Press 1995 has an entry for him. These
gave me the details about him I quoted.
I would love to link him in, as it would take his ancestry to the 1400s.
Leo.

Re: Aurelian Townshend
It's interesting that since this line connects us William Dugdale,
Garter King of Arms and his son John Dugdale, Norroy King of Arms,
that there isn't *more* writen up about the exact details.
For example, exactly when did William Agsborough, merchant of London
die? Wher is he buried? When was Anne Wythes born? When did she die?
Where is she buried?
Sometimes plowing through the sources, they tend to repeat each other
without giving any additional useful clues....

Re: Aurelian Townshend
I have just been reading "The Townshends of Raynham" by James Durham, 1922.
The author says he was the uncle of George 7th Marquis Townshend. Part I
(1398-1600) does not seem to mention Aurelian Townshend.
He records three generations of Thomas Townshends of Testerton; they all
married and had issue. Let me know (via this NG) if details of wives and
children are wanted. I am not connected with this family (as far as I
know).
Best wishes,
