Complete Peerage Addition: Marriage date of Edmund de Mortim

Legg inn av Douglas Richardson » 12 des 2007 18:16:02

Dear Newsgroup ~

The authoritative Complete Peerage, 9 (1936):281-283 (sub Mortimer)
includes a good account of the life history of Sir Edmund de Mortimer,
1st Lord Mortimer (died 1304). Regarding his marriage, the following
information is provided:

"He married, circa 1285, Margaret, daughter of Sir William de Fenles
(or de Fienes), 2nd cousin of Eleanor of Castile, Queen of Edward I,
by Blanche de Brienne." END OF QUOTE.

The source given for the date of Edmund and Margaret's marriage is
Cal. Charter Rolls, vol. ii, pg. 328, which shows that certain manors
were granted to Edmund and Margaret his wife on 6 Jan. 1285/6.

Actually Edmund and Margaret were married before 12 December 1285, as
indicated by the record below:

"29. Stokes respondebit xijo die Decembris [1285] Rogero de Stokes
clerico eunti ad capiendam seysinam de manerio de Markel' per
perceptum regis de quo dominus Edmundus de Mortuo Mari feofabit uxorem
suam, xxx s. unde respondebit." [Reference: Benjamin F. Byerly and
Catherine Ridder Byerly, Records of the Wardrobe and Household,
1285-1286 (1986), pg. 4].

Complete Peerage is correct in stating that Margaret de Fiennes was
near kinswoman to Queen Eleanor of Castile through her father, Sir
William de Fiennes, seigneur of Fiennes. However, Margaret was also
near kinswoman to both King Edward I of England and his wife, Queen
Eleanor of Castile, through her mother, Blanche de Brienne. King
Edward I, Queen Eleanor of Castile, and Blanche de Brienne are all
lineal descendants of King Henry II of England and his wife, Eleanor
of Aquitaine.

For interest's sake, the following is a list of the 17th Century New
World immigrants that descend from Sir Edmund de Mortimer and his
wife, Margaret de Fiennes:

Robert Abell, Elizabeth Alsop, William Asfordby, Barbara Aubrey, Anne
Baynton, Richard & William Bernard, John Bevan, Essex Beville, William
Bladen, George & Nehemiah Blakiston, Joseph Bolles, Thomas Booth,

Similarly, what source gives an exact birthyear for Catherine de
Mortimer ? I only have a 17-year span.

Thanks
