Royal Connection for the Marquis de La Fayette

Legg inn av John P. DuLong » 10 des 2007 01:37:24

Hello,

For no particular reason the other day I was wondering if the Marquis de
La Fayette, that is Marie-Joseph-Paul-Roch-Yves-Gilbert Motier, marquis
de la Fayette, has a royal connection to any French kings or for that
matter royalty in any other countries. Does anyone know if this is the
case? He was of the provincial Auvergne nobility and perhaps too remote
to Paris to have his ancestry cross paths with any royals.

His Motier ancestry is easily found in Père Anselme's Maison royale de
France, vol. 7, pp. 56-67, and Potier de Courcy's additions and
corrections, vol. 9, part 2, pp.502-503. With some effort I should be
able to trace out his ancestry, but as this is just a passing fancy, I
am hoping someone else has already done the work.

Arnaud's bibliography points to Comte Georges de Morant's Le sang royal
de France, (1920-1930), vol. 3, as perhaps containing a royal connection
for the Motier family. Has anyone seen this work? The subtitle
indicates that this book traces the descents from royalty through
feminine lines.

I noted that Ancestry.com has some fragments of the Marquis' ancestry,
but this source is not very reliable and in this particular case it
appears to be seriously mistaken in his de La Rivière ancestry.

Any information to help satisfy my intellectual curiosity would be
appreciated.

Yes, he descends from Charles VII, King of France, see RD600, p. 91.

Yes, indeed by an illegitimate connection -- a liaison between Charles VII
and an Agnes Sorel.

The Marquis de La Fayette appears to be an 11th great grandson of Charles
VII.

Charles VII is also reportedly the 14th Great-Grandfather of Queen Elizabeth
II and the 13th Great-grandfather of Prince Philip. He seems to be the most
recent King of France from whom both Elizabeth and Philip are descended.

Princes William and Henry are reportedly descended from Henri IV, through
Diana.

Charles VII 'Victorus' is, of course, the French King who won The Hundred
Years War -- "The Dauphin" to Jeanne d'Arc.

Charles VII was the principal beneficiary of Jeanne d'Arc's victories and
martyrdom.

'Victorus'? Where did that come from?

Thank you. I suspected that if there was a royal connection for the
Marquis de La Fayette it would already be printed. I will consult this
reference on my next visit to the Allen County Public Library.

His wife is also quite interesting. You know that the Marquis wrote
his Memoirs. They are here
http://books.google.com/books?id=HcgEAA ... te#PPP6,M1

in translation.

His wife, whom he married when he was 16, was Marie Adrienne Francoise
de Noailles. I haven't traced her out yet, but I'm fairly confident
she must ascend to both Lambert Hotman and Michel de Gaillard, both of
whom I've discussed here in the past as connected to myself, the
Bonapartes, and about a million people with French-Canadian ancestry.

Anne Jules, 2nd Duke of Noailles was also Marshal of France. This
Marie I'm hopeful is one of his descendents.

Yes now I can give the ascent for his wife Marie
Marie Adrienne Francoise de /Noailles/ 1759-1807
daughter of
Jean Paul Francois (born 1739), Duke of Ayen 1766-, Duke of /Noailles/
1793- (died 1824)
son of
Louis (1713-93), 4th Duke of /Noailles/ , Marshall of France
son of
Adrien-Maurice de Noailles (1678-1766), Count d'Ayen 1698-, 3rd Duke /
Noailles/ 1708-
son of

Anne Jules (1650-1708), 2nd Duke of /Noailles/ , Marshall of France
1693-
BY HIS WIFE
Marie Francoise de /Bournonville/ (1656-1748)

Then this Marie born 1656 ascends in seven steps to Lambert Hotman,
also in seven steps to Michel Gaillard, Seigneur de Chilly and
Longiumeau (died 1501), and in ten steps to

Charles (E) V, King of /France/ 1364-80 by his wife Jeanne (Joan) de /
Bourbon/

and also in ten steps to
John Galleazzo , Duke of /Milan/ 1386-1406 by his wife Isabel of /
France/

Will you also left out that
Marie Francoise de /Bournonville/ (born 1656 died 1748)
ascends in ten steps to
Rupert III, /HR Emperor/ (born 1352, died 1410)
