How many John Middletons ?

Dear Renia , Will and others,
Sir John Middleton of Belsay is
given as a son of Sir Thomas Middleton by Eliza Gramary in several rootsweb
trees. He married Christain de Strivelyn and had a son who was ancesteal to the
Baronets Middleton of Belsay plus two daughters, including Agnes, wife of
Sir John Manners (ancestral to the Earls and Dukes of Rutland). However I have
also seen a John Middleton married to a ____ Metcalfe who had a daughter
Maud Middleton who married John Barton. She evidently carried the manor of
Middleton , Lancashire to Barton and a daughter Margaret Barton took the manor to
Ralph Assheton becoming ancestral to the Assheton Baronets of Middleton,
Lancashire who is likewise given as a son of Sir Thomas Middleton and Eliza
Gramary., yet the fact that Belsay continued in the Middleton line for several
hundred years seems to argue otherwise. Any idea of who was who ?
Sincerely,

James W Cummings

Dixmont, Maine USA

I can't help, James. But my Bartons were the Lancashire Bartons (Barton
& Guestier Wine, eventually), so I'm a bit intrigued. There's a Manners
connection, too.
