Sir Thomas Smith, master of requests to James I

So there I was, minding my own business, extracting all the
genealogical data from
Cabell, James Branch "Branch of Abington..." Richmond, VA, William
Ellis Jones' Sons, 1911.

Which by the way, someone has really muffed up the line, but more on
that later....

When he in a casual way happens to mention a Sir Thomas Smith. Of
course I have a few *hundred* Smiths, Smythes, etc in my database
already, but this one sounded vaguely familiar.

The direct link to this page is
http://content.ancestry.com/Browse/Book ... gskw=&cr=1

for those of you with that particular Ancestry subscription.

Not really expecting much, I checked my database for Smyth, Smythe,
Smithe, Smith... when wham it smacked me right in the face.

This particular Thomas Smith happens to be a Cecil 4 and I had
virtually nothing on his life. With a name like Thomas Smith, it's
hard going. But now, it's not every day you find a new Cecil 4
floating around.

He is a four in the following way.
Sir Thomas Smith married
Francis Brydges (d 1663) daughter of William Brydges, 4th Baron
Chandos of Sudeley (d 1602) by his wife Mary Hopton

In her second marriage, Frances Brydges married... Thomas Cecil, 1st
Earl of Exeter (cr 1605), as his second wife

This Thomas was the son of William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley, the son
of
Richard Cecil

So now you ask OK so what. WHAT IN THE SAM HECK does this have to do
with the Branch family.

Well gentle reader, this source tells us that
Sir Thomas Smith, was the son of Thomas Smith (Mayor of Abingdon in
1584) and Joan Jennings

and Joan was the daughter of Thomas Jennings and Alice Bright
that is, Joan was the *sister* of that Katherine Jennings who married
William Branch of Abingdon

therefore Joan was the aunt of Lionel Branch, and the great-aunt of
Christopher Branch, Gent of Kingsland, Virginia.

So the entire Branch/Jennings clan is swept into close proximity to
Richard Cecil.

Thank you Will for that excellent post, much appreciated.

Here are the details of Sir Thomas Smith from that work you cited.
Perhaps someone could venture a guess as to what these details tell us
about *when* Thomas might have been born? I'm not sure what a Public
Orator and/or a Proctor is or how old you have to be, to be one.

http://content.ancestry.com/Browse/Book ... gskw=&cr=1
graduated from Christ Church, Oxford, becoming Public Orator in 1582,
Proctor in 1584; then secretary to the second Earl of Essex, and clerk
to the Privy Council in 1587; member for Parliament for Cricklade in
1588-9, for Tamworth in 1593, for Aylesbury in 1597-8; in 1597 clerk
of Parliament, in place of Anthony Wyckes, alias Mason; in 1599 sent
to summon the Earl of Essex before the Privy Council; knighted by
James I and made Latin secretary, master of requests, &c; buried at
Fulham, where there is a monument of him; and left bequests to the
Bodleian Library and to Abingdon. He married Frances, daughter of
William Bruges, Lord Bruges.

Thank you Will for your excellent post.

You will note, that we now have two competing secondary sources.

RD600 which you had earlier posted (quite some time back) states that
the wife of Richard Branch of Abingdon, and the royal connection was
Elizabeth BOSTOCK but cites no sources.

However James Branch Cabell states that the wife of this same Richard
Branch of Abingdon was Elizabeth BEAUFOREST citing Vis Oxford 1566,
"Beauforest of Dorchester" (thank you Will for the exact ref) but
however I note there, that it is a bit vague.

stating that Richard Branch married Elizabeth Bostock and by her had
his son William Branch who married Catherine Jennings (but citing no
source)

Cabell, James Branch "Branch of Abington." Richmond, VA, William Ellis
Jones' Sons, 1911.
states that Elizabeth Beauforest's ancestry is enumerated in Vis
Oxford 1566, "Beauforest of Dorchester"

Thank you Will for your excellent post, much appreciated.

You *Will* note, *Will* you not, that your Sir Thomas Smith, master of
requests to James I is also in the ancestry of Camilla Parker-Bowles
or whatever she is called.

W.A.R. has her writeup
http://www.wargs.com/royal/camilla.html

but misses on a few dates, for example
Thomas Carey is called "second son" to Robert Carey, 1st Earl of
Monmouth, and in fact, Thomas has an obit in 1648 where he is called
"aet 33".

Sir Thomas Smith, his father-in-law and #14774 in Camilla's ancestry
was born "about 1556" per
http://www.berkshirehistory.com/bios/tsmith.html
which relates that he was a student at Christ Church 1573, graduated
BA Dec 1574
He died 27 Nov 1609 at his residence in Parsons Green, Fulham and is
buried at Fulham Church 7 Dec 1609 with an M.I. there extant

His wife Frances Brydges, which W.A.R. calls Frances "Chandos"
although I'm not sure that was actually her surname, her father was
William Brydges, 4th Baron Chandos of Sudeley, but I'd have to be
convinced the children took Chandos as a surname.

At any rate Frances died in 1663. W.A.R. cuts off the continuation of
the line beyond this generation, however for Margaret (Smith) Carey as
"1" I have the following:

20 William Jennings
21 Joan Bostock
22 Richard Bright of Collen
23 Unknown
24 John Brydges, 1st Baron Chandos of Sudeley (cr 1554, died 1557)
25 Elizabeth Grey
26 Edmund, 1st Baron Bray
27 Jane Halliwell
28 Sir Arthur Hopton
29 Anne Owen
30 Sir Edward Itchingham
31 Unknown

at least five of these have royal ascents, to England, Scotland and
Jerusalem.
