What's in a name Pyers, Pyter

Here's an odd one.

Vis Yorkshire, 1563-4, "Vavasor"

I always thought that "Piers" was the same as "Peter" but this seems
to imply either two two sisters married a father and son, of that the
two names Pyers and Pyter aren't the same name, at least in this time
period.
