Seal of the Smiths of Narragansett

I finally received my (expensive) second-hand copy of Daniel Berkeley
Updike's _Richard Smith: First English Settler of the Narragansett
Country_ (1937), and must say it's a very beautifully-produced book
(albeit a bit battered by now). The author published it from his own
Merrymount Press in Boston, known for its fine work.

Updike publishes the marriage record of Richard Smith and Joan Barton
from the Thornbury, Gloucs., parish register, as well as the likely
baptisms of their children there (if I'm understanding correctly, the
Thornbury registers give only names of children and their baptismal
sponsors--no names of parents).

Updike says the two Richard Smiths of Narragansett used an armorial
seal which was _not_ the same as the seal of Nibley Smith/ Smyth
family. Smith describes this seal as basically a chevron between
three leopards'/ cats'/ foxes' faces, tinctures uncertain (the title
page reproduces this image).

Searching on the internet, I find a reference to the seal used by
Richard Smith, Jr., in which it is described as "a chevron between
three leopards' faces. Tinctures not indicated clearly, but the
chevron looks as if it might be _or_."

Updike indicates this is not the known seal of any English Smith
family. Does anybody know if that statement is correct?
