A closely related error: Alexander Sutherland of Dunbeath is not,
according to CP XII/1 546-7, the son of Robert Sutherland, 6th
Earl of Sutherland, who did indeed have a son Alexander, just not this
Alexander Sutherland.

Here we both may be wrong. Burke's Peerage 1938, page 2365 gives that Robert
6th Earl of Sutherland had only one son, the next Earl. However, Burke's
Peerage 1999 leaves it open.
Sir Iain Moncreiffe of the Isles (one of my sources) only establishes the
wife of Alexander, but the Extinct Peerage 1866 page 493 does the same.
All that remains is J. & R. W. Munro, Acts of the Lords of the Isles
1336-1493, published in 1986 to which I no longer have access. .
