Gramma's AT

Legg inn av John Brandon » 16 nov 2007 18:00:04

Here, for your comments (and hopefully corrections), are numbers 1-100
in the ancestor table of Mrs. W. G. Macy of Normal, Illinois (nee Ella
J. Porter of Merrimac, Massachusetts), my maternal grandmother. I'll
be posting her AT in chunks of 100 ancestors, as I get them ready. I
will leave unknown ancestors in the numbering systems, so some
segments of 100 may have large empty gaps. I will also fully repeat
any duplicated ancestors (of which there are many, particularly in the
Newbury, Mass., families of Noyes, Merrill, and Knight). I've noted
her matrineal ancestors (who happen also to be my own matrilineal
line).

Any comments and corrections welcome ...

Yikes, already noted an error:

51. Hannah Harvey or Hovey [25/102], b. 15 June 1745 Mansfield,
Connecticut living 1783 Horton Township, Nova Scotia

I believe this was quite definitely Hannah HOVEY, a daughter of Daniel
Hovey, grantee at Horton, Nova Scotia, in the 1760s, although one
source gives her surname as "Harvey." Nos. 102 and 103 will continue
on as Daniel Hovey and his wife Elizabeth Slapp.

That's the bad thing about ATs -- endless cleanup of small, incorrect
details. Ugh.

36. Robert Huston [18/72], b. 14 Dec. 1737 Falmouth, Maine d. between
1780-1790 Falmouth, Maine m. 3 Dec. 1761 Scarborough, Maine
37. Sarah Jones [18/74], b. 19 Oct. 1738 d. --- [? Falmouth, Maine]
[said by Leroy M. Bailey of Wethersfield, Connecticut, to be a
daughter of John and Mehitable (Wakeham) Jones of Scarborough, Maine]

Robert Huston's parents and ancestry was identified in an article in
the Maine Genealogist 25 (2003):147-63 and continued in 26 (2004):
15-35. Sarah Jones' parents are still unidentified in that.

I'm assuming that you've already used "History of Kings County, Nova
Scotia" by Arthur W.H. Eaton (Salem, MA, 1910) and Crowell's New
Englanders in Nova Scotia (which you can get on microfilm).

Yep, I have a copy of that article (by my former co-author, Janet
Delorey), and think the next generation is William Huston and
Elizabeth --- (possibly McCausland).

I corresponded once with Leroy Bailey, who submitted the Stephen
Huston and Amos Hawkes entries in one of the _Maine Families in 1790_
volumes, and he said something like "I was thrilled recently to prove
that Sarah Jones was a daughter of John Jones and Mehitable Wakeham,"
but gave no further details (and unfortunately I did not follow up).
But he seemed satisfied it was correct. I've looked at the
_Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire_ and John and
Mehitable would have had lines from Cotton, Ham, and Meader, besides
the obvious Jones and Wakeham connections.

Yes to Eaton, no to Crowell (I might need to check it for leads on
Joseph Williams and Benjamin and Hannah (---) Brooks, although I
ulterly despise microfilm [microfilm takes all the fun out of
everything]). I sort of feel he was the Benjamin Brooks who had a
child at Colchester (where so many Nova Scotia people came from) in
the 1750s. But cracking that mystery has been a no-go so far.

I'm still very impressed at how full that AT is. You've got precious
few wholes going back through the early 18th century. Bravo to you.

I guess that's the one upside of having so many duplicate lines; at
least most everything that can be traced IS traced. And I suppose my
grandmother's "family wreath" is nowhere near as bad as my
grandfather's duplicate Nantucket lines. Although when you add my
grandmother's four Kimball lines to my grandfather's two Kimball
lines ...

One small change: I've decided not to include the "unknowns" in the
list (in the higher number ranges, the blanks simply become too
large).

First, some corrections to the first 100 (replace with the items
below):

78. David Flint [39/156], bapt. 27 March 1715 Salem, Massachusetts d.
after 1739 [possibly at Marblehead, Massachusetts, but there is no
mention of his death in the published VRs] [mentioned with siblings in
1737 Essex county deed (13:92) as the heirs of Ruth (Flint) Flint,
daughter of Thomas Flint; see Harriet R. W. Cooke, Driver Family, pp.
305-6, and Essex Institute Historical Collections, 16 (1879):92.]

79. Hannah Holman [39/158], b. --- [? Marblehead, Massachusetts], d.

John Porter ..." This clearly draws on the "Carver note" by Joseph W.
Porter, author of the standard Porter genealogy, in Register 55
(1901): 221-2, which shows Mercy Carver as an unmarried daughter (no
death date given) of John and Millicent (Ford) Carver with a younger
half-sister, Experience Drake, who, at age 16 in 1699, chose John
Porter of Weymouth as her guardian. John Porter later married

--- [? Marblehead, Massachusetts], d.
after 1739 (probably a daughter of Samuel and Sarah Holman of
Barnstaple, England, and Marblehead, as she was presumably a sister of
the John Holman who married David Flint's sister Huldah)

Both David and Hannah (Holman) Flint were still living in 1743, when
their son Thomas Flint was born at Marblehead.

127. Sarah Wass [63/254], b. 24 Jan. 1737/8 [probably West Tisbury,
Martha's Vineyard] d. 23 Feb. 1813 Cornwallis Township, Nova Scotia

Should have been noted as a matrilineal ancestor.

Guess I'll go ahead and put up nos. 201-300 (this segment was easier
to "fix up" than I had anticipated). Of course, there may well be
mistakes, as the Eatons have always been very dull to me (except for
the Gerrard Spencer-Brooks-Lord-Skinner-Bigelow and the new Richard
Smith-Newton-Wells lines behind Eunice Wells Eaton) and probably I
didn't pay as much attention as I ought.

I would be interested in finding a baptismal or birth date for Sarah
Sanders, number 209. Or any tweaking of dates on the stodgy Eatons
that anyone can offer. Or, does anybody know anything about Randalls,
Aldrichs, and Bensons?

Yeah, but I'm getting a little tired of them. I have four Kimball
lines from this grandmother, plus two from her husband (descendant two
ways of Mary Severance who married James Coffin of Nantucket). Those
lines plus my four or five White of Connecticut, 8 Starbuck, 9 Coffin,
6 Macy, 6 Gardner, and 3 Howland, really cut down on the possible
number of royal descents I could have (I still have five or six, but
they're all rather remote: Edmond Hawes [probably my favorite for
some reason], Mary Gye Maverick, William Sargent, Capt. Anthony
Collamore, Giddings-Lawrence, plus Joan [Price] Cleeves [still not
quite convinced about that one]).

Oh, how true.
I have Starbuck, Coffins, and Macys as in-laws and step-parents of
various ancestors. They _did_ get around.

My grandfather's ancestor table was so overdetermined with those names
(plus a few others--Folger, Bunker, Hussey, Coleman, Gayer, Barnard),
that practically his only interesting lines were from the bizarrely-
named Elder Hatevil Nutter and Jedediah Fitch (who brought the Fitch,
Whitfield, Mason, and ... alas ... Peck ancestry).

Well, you may want more ancestors of Plantagenet descent, but you're
knee-deep in Mayflower ancestors. The grass is always greener. . . .

Actually, I've decided I'm pretty pleased with my royal lines, as
remote as they are. I'm doing pretty good in that department (for
someone whose royal lines only come through New England immigrants;
who has slightly less than 3/8 New England ancestry; and who has _so_
many duplicated lines). Can anybody here show they have more
duplicate lines than I have, by the way? There was a note in an old
NEHGS _NEXUS_ about someone with 20+ lines from an early settler at
Hampton, New Hampshire (Sanborn or Dearborn, maybe?).

I've never seen what all the fuss is about Mayflower lines (they were
all fairly commonplace personages, weren't they?). (With the
exception of Winslow, Allerton, Brewster, and Bradford ... maybe.)

Other things I like about my New England ancestry ...

- the matrilineal line all the way back to Agnes Baxter, who married
in Edinburgh in 1644 to Rev. John Hart of Crail, Scotland (later of
Taughboyne/ Monreagh in Ireland).

- the Gifford line (of course).

- the Cleeves-Mitton descent.

- Plus, someone told me they found a will in the Archdeaconry of
Bedfordshire mentioning the testator's "sister Elinor Whitbred," who
would be the maternal grandmother of the Spencers of Lynn and
Connecticut (who are behind Sarah Lord Skinner in this AT). The
testator (late 1500s) was a member of the minor Bedfordshire gentry,
had an M.I. someplace in co. Bedford, etc. I was dismayed when this
person said they passed the clue along to Paul Reed (who's also a
Spencer descendant), since that may be the same thing as effectively
burying the information for good.

What do you mean by a DUPLICATE LINE?

You know, cousin intermarriage. The fact that I'm descended five ways
from Rev. William and Anne (Parker) Noyes ... That sort of thing.

Paul is notorious for promising articles and then, you look up fifteen
years later, and it's still a state secret not even close to being
published.

The will mentions "sister Eleanor Whitbread" as well as nephew
"Jarrett Spencer".
However, Paul wasnt able to connect to an earlier generation, as
Eleanor's father apparently didnt leave a will, & parish registers
begin late.
Maybe I'll find something more about it in the future.

Yeah, who cares ...

But maybe you could finally at least give the name of the brother who
mentioned sister Elinor and nephew Jarrard? Or is that still filed
under "state secrets I can use to tease and torment people with from
time to time."

O.K. Those are not DUPLICATE lines but simply MULTIPLE lines from the same
ancestor -- each line is unique at some point and is not the duplicate of
another line.

Noyes -- a Good Yale Name.

Thomas Call married Bennett Harrison
June 1619 at Hernhill, Kent.
The IGI gives two varying dates for their marriage.
I looked at the original a few years ago and have the correct
date noted somewhere.

Bennett was bp. at Preston by Faversham, 3 June 1599,
daughter of Arnold Harrison.

Who is your most ubiquitous colonial ancestor, and by how many lines? I
thought my Gloucester-born grandfather had 14 descents from Thomas
Millett of Gloucester and his father-in-law John Greenoway of
Dorchester, but now I only see 12 descents in my database. I don't
remember why two might have disappeared!

I assumed that ancestor repetitions of a dozen to upwards of 20 descents
from the same individual would be the norm for people who can trace 300
years of ancestry in the same New England town.

Wow, a tiny crumb of information from The Grand Mahler after ten years
of sucking up ... See, folks, it really *does* pay off!

Some of us would still like to know the name of Elinor Whitbread's
brother, especially if there's nothing more to be found concerning the
family. Why sit on something that probably never will be able to be
extended?

Well, Nat, you have me beat there. I think the most I can claim is 9
from Tristram Coffin of Salisbury (or was it Haverhill or Newbury?)
and Nantucket. But I have quite a number of families in the middling
range of 4-7 descents each:

Starbuck
Macy
Gardner
Kimball
Noyes
Knight
Merrill
White

You must be sick of the names Millett and Greenoway by now ...

Ok, his name was Thomas.

Do you want more details?

First, you'll have to make a public apology to David Greene.

And you'll have to say some nice things about me as well.

Forgot to include these earlier (since it's my grandmother's third
distinct Porter line and second distinct Skinner line, I guess my mind
boggled). Is it really true that Ebenezer Skinner (who married Sarah
Lord) was from a different Skinner family that had its beginnings at
Malden, Massachusetts? (Somehow this seems a little difficult to
believe, when there was a Skinner family available right there in
Connecticut).

496. Joseph Skinner
497. Mary Filley
498. John Porter
499. Joanna Gaylord

(Will fill in dates later). I hope it's correct (never guaranteed).

Dear John ~

We share Tenney, Bushnell, Wells, Hubbell, Wakeman (in England - not
listed- behind Hubbell), Meigs (yes, it is correct), Frye (not listed
- behind Meigs), Skinner (in England), Drake, Shakespeare (in England
- of course), and lastly Bliss. I imagine we'll find some more
ancestry in common as you continue to post Gramma's ancestry table.

I believe the most recent treatment of this family was in Threlfall's
26 Great Migration Colonists.
It probably fails to include the will of William Hatch of Frant,

same person as this William.
This explains the marriage of his son Thomas in the adjacent parish of

Timothy, Joseph, Susan, Ephraim, Thomas and Elizabeth, as well as
mentioning Allen Breed.

However, the will of Elizabeth's husband, Thomas Greenwood of

John Cutting was a ship master from Ipswich, Suffolk:

On the birth of Martha Reade, what do you think of thishttp://kinnexions.com/smlawson/gallup.htm

Here's his contact infohttp://kinnexions.com/smlsource/contact.htm

Might be interesting to ask him, from where he got this list of
children with birth (baptismal?) dates

Hmm, don't know. The webpage below, which I also like, isn't so
specific ...

Oh here we go.
It was in NEHGR (1930)

http://books.google.com/books?sourceid= ... a=N&tab=wp

"born 13 Jul, baptised 22 Jul " [of 1602]

We might be getting closer.
Look here
http://www.kdvkfamilytree.50megs.com/2447.htm

they give a source at least for this family, without specifying this
exact date, but they also state here that she was born in Salem,
England. Possibly there is an extracted IGI entry? I'll take a look.

Hmmm, don't know. Could be right, I suppose. That Rixford Leach book
is terrible, however. I've looked at it many times (the local public
library had a copy).

Probably the most interesting person in this set is no. 1733 Mary
Courthope, the second wife of George Iddenden or Edenden, a marriage I
found in the extracted IGI, and which is a perfect match, as Edmund
their son (my ancestor) was born in October of the next year. The
standard Edenden article in NEHGR states that nothing was known about
George's second wife, not even a given name. Does anybody know if
this is a new "discovery" ...?

Does anyone have information about the couple below?

My maiden name was Marsh and George and Elizabeth are my direct Marsh
ancestors, so they are very important to me.

I've found all sorts of wonderful and ancient families since joining Gen-Med
but not the Marshes. My brother recently took a DNA test as part of a
Marsh study, to sort out who all the various Marsh branches were, but George
who settled in Hingham in 1635 seems to be elusive.

In the Marsh family history book published by E.J. Marsh and 1887,
reproduced by NEHGS, it says that the name was originally de Marisco, and I
would love to imagine that I descended from those naughty pirates of Lundy
Island!

Best wishes

Merilyn

Merilyn, is this also the family of Eddie (Edward Howard) Marsh who
was Winston Churchill's private secretary? There is a biography of him
by Christopher Hassall, that might have traced any connection to
pirates - apart from his professional one with WSC - but I can't
recall genealogical details.

Peter
Unfortunately Eddie isn't one of mine. I Googled him and he sound a very
interesting character. All my Marshes stayed in Massachusetts until my
great grandfather Rev. William Gilbert Marsh came to Australia in 1860.
Best wishes

Actually, Doug sent an email which jogged my memory about there being
some problem with the parentage of James Sanders who married Sarah
Page. In checking Pope's _Pioneers of Massachusetts_, I noticed that
while James Sanders is supposed to have been born "ca. 1643," his
claimed parents John and Hester (Rolfe) Sanders are listed with sons
John, b. 1641 (died young), and John, b. 1644, and many other
children, but no son James. Also, if you check Robert Leigh Ward's
AT, no. 944, James Sanders, is said to have been "b. ca. 1643,
ENGLAND," and his ancestry is not traced further in the table.

http://users.erols.com/rlward1/ahnentafel.html

So I will probably have to remove John and Hester (Rolfe) Sanders from
my list.

The last couple of sections were particularly interesting (perhaps) as
showing lines of descent from four siblings (the children of Robert
and Bridget [Allger] White of Messing, Essex):

--John White
--Mary White, wife of Joseph Loomis
--Anna White, wife of John Porter
--Elizabeth White, wife of William Goodwin

Moreover, there are multiple lines of descentn from John White through
two women who married into the Eaton family (one from Eunice Wells
Eaton, two from Deborah White Eaton).

I think Gary Boyd Roberts has said that Robert and Bridget (Allger)
White are the couple most found in the ancestry of people with
substantial Connecticut ancestry. I guess one can see why.

Discussing President Millard Fillmore, Gary also noted that "[n]oble
connections might be traced through Fillmore's probable Loomis,
Lingwood & Marlar descents ..."

Assuming that Agnes (Lingwood) Loomis was a daughter of John and Jane
(Lingwood) Marler in the pedigree below, we do get some pretty ancient
lines, though probably none with connections to the high nobility (I'm
purely guessing here). Would the Fastolphes be connections of Sir
John Fastolf?

These people are in the IGI:

William Foxe m. Margaret Clarke
1 Dec. 1632 at Saddington co. Leicester.
Daughter Hannah was bp. at Lubenham on 10 Nov. 1633.

Margaret (Clarke) Foxe had a daughter Elizabeth
married to Edward Chapman 24 June 1662 at nearby
Market Harborough, co. Leicester. They also went to Windsor, Ct.

Another marriage at Saddington, Leicestershire, was ...

Gerard Spencer to Friswid Einsworth, 11 Oct. 1633

Could this have been the marriage of Gerard Spencer of Lynn and
Connecticut, whose wife is usually called "Hannah ..."?
