Margaret Bereford (?) Pultney Lovayne

Dear Douglas and All,

It seems agreed that Margaret was the daughter of Sir John Bereford by his wife Roesia. Has Roesia been identified? Could she have been a St. John?

Unfortunately, I have not read Walter Lee Sheppard’s account of the two wives of Nicholas Lovayne and shall as soon as I have access. Therefore, if he has given proof of the parentage as Margaret Bereford, I look forward to seeing it. Without doubt, Sir John de Poultney married a Margaret and Nicholas Lovayne married two Margarets.

Is it in the following that a conclusion has been reached that Roesia Bereford was Pultney’s mother in law?
(1331) Grant to John de Poultney, citizen of London, to whom Edmund, earl of Kent, owed at his death…the latter sum being due to the said John as executor of Roesia de Bereford; for release of the earl’s soul….of the market of the royalty of the market of Derteford….together with the custody of the hundreds of Weblestan and Lethelfeld, co. Kent…during the minority of Edmund son and heir of the said earl. If the said Edmund die before attaining his full age, leaving his heir under age, John de Pulteney is to retain the farm and hundreds until the day on which Edmund would have been full age. (CPR 4 Edw II) [This young Edmund was the son of Edmund Plantagenet, 1st earl of Kent and Margaret Wake.]

In 1332, John de Bereford, serjeant of the king’s marshalsea, held Bixbreche and Merdenne hundred, Kent in capite (CPR 6 E. III) which in 1317 with Ospringe had been identified as belonging to Queen Margaret.

If John de Bereford is holding Merdene in 1332, how had it passed to the St. Johns who sold it to Lovayne. East Sussex Record Office Archive of Gage family of Firle Catalogue Ref. SAS/

I find many questions remaining. Thank you for your thoughts.
