Dear Ian Goddard:

Your question - have I a resolution whether or not
Upper Thonge, Austonley, and Holme belonged to manor
Wakefield at time of Domesday.

Regret I have no idea.

All three townships are in the parish of
Almondbury(outskirts of Huddersfield) located about
15-20 miles west of Wakefield.

The Lacys possessed numerous manors in the
Pontefract/Wakefield/Huddersfield area. May I suggest
that you research and examine the following for
possible clues:

(1) 1066: Odo Bishop of Bayeux - the Lacy estates in
both Normandy and many in UK were held under him. Odo
possessed in UK 439 manors/lordships in 13 counties
worth 3000/-/- year.

(2) 1068/69: Ilbert Lacy 1 was sent by William 1 to
break revolt in north of England. Area from York to
Durham destroyed. William 1 granted Ilbert Lacy lord
of Pontefract complete with 150 manors and castle
Clitheroe (Orderic Vitalis)

(3)The Lacy Family brothers Ilbert 1 and Walter 1 Lacy
held all property equally as heirs in units not less
than 1 kt fee. Younger brothers not holding knight
fees received family property but not held to knight
service. (Wightman)

(4) 1080-1090: Odo Bishop Bayeux had a hectic period
- arrest, imprisonment, freed, advisor thereafter to
Robert Mortain, fled to Normandy, adviser to Robert
Curthose

(5) 1095-1105: Robert Lacy charged with sympathy with
Odo and Odo's associates - lands forfeited and
returned number of times.

(6) 1090: Robert 1 Lacy founded St John Pontefract.
Granted seven churches, each with 1/10th manor.
Churches mentioned included Silkstone, Kippax, Ledsham
which are in the Almondbury area.
Other properties mentioned in the same year granted by
Robert included Bramley and Dodworth also in the
Almondbury area.

(7) 1135-54: Charter 430 King Stephen grants to Henry
Lacy 1 land at Dalton, and castles at Almondbury and
Barwick in Elmet Yorkshire. (Reg RAN V3)

Note: I understand the main street in Almondbury is
named "De Lacy Avenue" - local claim that Lacy gave
the name!!!

(8) Mid 1100s: Lacys had a staff of clerics at
Clitheroe and Pontefract. Major tenants became
honerary barons at Pontefract, Nottingham, Bradford,
Almondbury, Clitheroe (Wightman)

(9) Other avenues to investigate:
(a) The many church registers of Lancashire and
Yorkshire.
(b) Junior Lacy lines - Cromwellbotham, Beverley,
Filey - also but doubtful the Hereford and Ireland
lines.
(c) Properties realised through marriages of:
Ilbert 1 Lacy - (1) Hadruda (2) Hawise
Robert 1 Lacy - (1) ? suspected (2) Matilda

Ilbert 1 Lacy possessed so much property 1069-1070
from William 1, the possibility that the three
townships in the parish of Almondbury were part of his
holdings appears a distinct possibility.

Sincerely Yours,

Paul Bulkley

Thanks for that, Paul, although whoever gave you to understand that De
Lacy Avenue is the main street might have been pulling your leg - it's
very much C20th suburban. The main street of the Lacy development would
have been Northgate (being in Yorkshire "gate" maintains its original
meaning of "way", not something interposed to block the way).

The castle is some distance from the Lacy village. It's a nice motte &
bailey planted on top of a late bronze age hill fort with a Victorian
jubilee tower sitting on top of the motte. They established the village
in a more sheltered site.
