It appears we are expected to read between the lines, a simple statement no longer is to mean what it says.

And so I thought I'd have a look at some of the Magna Carta sureties. After all when one is mentioned there is that panoply of ancestors that really is meant.

Richard de Clare, 4th Earl of Hertford
descends (amongst others) from Ranulph de Meschines, 1st Earl of Chester, Richard I, Duke of Normandy, Hugues Capet, KIng of France, Rollo, 1st Duke of Normandy, Heinrich the Fowler, Emperor, Charlemagne, but no WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR

Guillaume de Forz, Count of Aumale
descends (amongst others) from Duncan II, king of Scots, Robert the Devil, Duke of Normandy, Malcolm III, King of Scots, Aethelred II the Unready, king of England, Heinrich the Fowler Emperor, Alfred the Great king of England, Charlemagne, but no WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR

Geoffrey de Mandeville
descends from no-one interesting apparently, no CHARLEMAGNE NOR WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR

Saher de Quincy
descends (amongst others) from Robert the Devil, duke of Normandy, Heinrich the Fowler Emperor, Edward I the Elder, king of England, Alfred the Great, king of England, Charlemagne but no WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR

Henry de Bohun, 1st Earl of Hereford
descends (amongst others) from David I the Saint, king of Scots, St.Margaret of Wessex, Henri I, king of France, Robert the Devil, duke of Normandy, Charlemagne but no WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR

Roger Bigod, 2nd Earl of Norfolk
descends (amongst others) from Richard I, duke of Normandy, Hugues Capet, king of France, Charlemagne but no WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR

Robert de Vere,
descends (amongst others) from Richard I, duke of Normandy, Hugues Capet, king of France, Heinrich the Fowler Emperor, Charlemagne but no WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR

William Marshal, 2nd Earl of Pembroke
descends (amongst others) from Henri I, king of France, Brian Boru, Charlemagne but no WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR

Robert FitzWalter
descends (amongst others) from Richard I, duke of Normandy, Heinrich the Fowler Emperor, Charlemagne but no WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR

Gilbert de Clare, 5th Earl of Hertford
descends (amongst others) from Henry I, king of England and thus from William the Conqueror and Charlemagne.

I wonder how many more of this group descends from both-------my guess is not many.

I will return to take a persons word for what is said, no good getting out crystal balls to establish by proxy _who they really mean_

And so back to my observation that too much attention is paid (by some) to only a few specific people in medieval history.

With best wishes
