Back in July there was a discussion of the possible Jewish descent of Sancha
de Ayala. The general opinion was a negative one as I remember. Does anyone
have any comments on the following descent, which relates to the Davidic
descent of the House of Windsor. This is not just a Jewish descent of
Spanish royalty but (apparently) a connection between Spanish royalty and
the House of Exilarchs. As far as I can see Hiyya Al Daudi is a historic
figure - at least I think he is mentioned in the Jewish Encylopedia at:
http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/view. ... larch#1609
Juana m. Juan II, king of Aragon, d. of;
Fadrique m. Mariana of Cordova, s. of;
Alfonso m. Juana de Mendoza, s. of
Paloma m. Fadrique (d 1358) brother of Enrique II of Castile, d. of;
Gedaliah, who was the son of and whose line is as follows:
Shlomo Ha-Zeken (d. 1299)
Yosef (d. 1264)
Yahya Ha Nasi or Don Yahya "El Negro" Lord of Aldeia dos Negros, Portugal (d

another, more probable, injection of Jewish blood into Europe's aristocratic

Yahia Ben Bakr, was of Sephardic Jewish origin
father of
Bakr Ben Yahia
father of
Aloandro Ben Bakr, Governor of Faro, was also known as Aloandro Gil, was a
Mozarab, an Iberian Christian living under Muslim domination.
father of
Madragana Ben Aloandro, later known as Maior Afonso of Mor Afonso, she was
born about 1230 in Faro, Portugal. After Afonso III, king of Portugal, took
Faro from the Moors, her father offered him his daughter. She was
re-christened, receiving her new name as Maior Afonso, Mor being short for
Maior (meaning "the bigger"), a common female name in medieval Portugal.
Afonso was given her in baptism as her new patronym, meaning "the daughter
of" Afonso - implying that her elderly royal lover was also her godfather,
and that she took his spiritual fatherhood when christened. At times
Madragana was also called Mourouana, Mourana Gil amd Madraganil in ancient
Portuguese chronicles - all of these Iberian Christian names. Madragana had
two children fathered by the king. When her relationship with the king
waned, she was married to Fernao Rei, and they had documented issue: at
least one daughter, Sancha Fernandes.
There is, however, some controversy regarding the fact that she might
have been a Moor even though it is obvious from the facts that she was not.
Duarte Nunes, a Portuguese royal chronicler of the 16th century, tells us
that Madragana was a Moor. This is denied by Antonio Caetano de Sousa, in
the 18th century, in the Historia Genealogica da Casa Real Portuguesa.
The first kings who were her descendants are Afonso VI, King of Portugal,
and his brother Pedro II, King of Portugal.
King George III of Great Britain has 3 lines of descend from her
his Queen Charlotte also has 3 lines
I have made a incomplete list of her descendants over 15 generations. If
anyone is interested I gladly send it on.
