Lacy of Pontefract

I refer to Will Honson’s rather reckless claim that
Robert Lacy 1 was banished 1103, and that it made no
“sense” that Hugh Lacy (Robert’s brother) Abbot Selby
Abbey resigned 1123 – 20 years later – in disgust.

As a professional genealogist, Mr Honson felt
obligated to give a lengthy lecture on how a Gen Med
subscriber should provide evidence supporting any
claim.

It is unfortunate that our expert does not practice
what he preaches. It is significant that what he
considers as evidence would be laughed out of any self
respecting court of law.

The proclaimed evidence – a very general statement by
William Farrer, in his introduction to the Court Rolls
of the Honor of Clitheroe – offers no real evidence.
William Farrer, well respected, rather like our self
opionated subscriber, delighted in proving the errors
of others. Such a weakness may sometimes have
distorted his conclusions.

Anyhow let us consider Honson’s claim. Perhaps he
would advise us of his definition of the term
“banishment”. Surely he must know because he is so
emphatic – “Robert 1 Lacy was banished from England
1103” That’s it.

Apparantly St Michaels Chapel Clitheroe is considered
the source of this claim. A little two cent chapel
less than 30 feet long – what an ideal place to record
charters of the early 1100s! More likely the
incumbant’s source of information was limited to the
idle gossip of a passing by soldier. Perhaps Honson
has an explanation.

This so called banishment as claimed is difficult to
accept seriously. Both Robert 1 Lacy and King Henry 1
spent much of their time in Normandy, not England,
getting wives and ghastly brats, and the visits to
“Jolly Olde England” were occupied in issuing numerous
charters and the founding of churches and abbeys to
protect their guilty souls.

And what was the relationship of King Henry 1 and
Robert 1 Lacy? Some authorities claim it was bad but
that does not appear to make sense. Examination of
records do not suggest continuous animosity.
Relationships in general at that time fluctuated.
Loyalty and hostility changed, just like US foreign
policy, subject to money, power, and convenience.

The following data suggests strongly that Honson’s
claim is “Simply Nonsense”

1091 Robert Lacy founded Priory St John Pontefract
(Janet Burton)
1095 Robert Lacy forfeits all estates for aiding
rebellion in favor of Stephen Aumale (g/son Duke
Robert 11) against William Rufus (Ct Rolls Clitheroe)
1100 King Henry 1 returned fief Cltheroe, Boland,
Pontefract back to Robert Lacy. (Ct Roll Clitheroe)

1103 Robert Lacy banished, estates in hands of king,
for joining rebellion of Robert Belesme (Ct Roll
Clitheroe)
1106 Fee of Pontefract held by Robert Lacy forfeited
to king due to favoring Robert Curthose (Lanc P/R
p384, Ch St John Pontefract)
1107 Fee of Pontefract returned to Robert Lacy
(Wightman)

(Wightman p66)
1110 Robert Lacy founded house of Kirksby York
subjected to La Chante sur Loure (Janet Burton)
1112 Charter by Robert Lacy (similar wording to his
1090 Charter #2). Witness: Robert Lisours – future
husband Albreda Lacy (Ch St John)
1112 Robert Lacy (m) Matilda (d) -------- Children
Albreda 1113, Ilbert 1114, Henry 1117, Walter 1119 (Ch

1114-1118 Dugdale confirmed that Robert Lacy was
banished twice. (Stanlaw –Yahoo – 29)
1114-1118 Payne Fitz John (s) John Moleculus held Lacy
properties in Lincolnshire (Wightman 66)
1114-1118 Hugh de Laval granted 7 churches incl
Whalley, Castle chapel Clitheroe, tithes of town
Pontefract, and those demesne at Clitheroe to St John
Pontefract (Janet Burton)
1119-1129 Hugh de Laval succeeded to Robert Lacy’s
estates in Lincolnshire (Wightman 59,61)
1121-22 Payne Fitz John witnessed charters re church
Nostel. (Wightman 68)
1121 Robert Lacy dispossessed and banished, this time
finally, his estates value 60 kt fee to Hugh de Laval,
who granted a charter to monks of Pontefract in June
1121. (Ch St John)
1122 Hugh de Laval confirms all gifts made by Robert
Lacy to Pontefract (very detailed) Witness: Henry 1,
Bishops Roger and Robert. (Ch St John)
1123 Hugh Lacy (abbot of Selby Abbey) resigned
(possibly in disgust of banishment of his brother
Robert (Ch St John)
1123/1130 Robert Lacy confirmed grant by his father
Ilbert of the property of Hamelton to Selby Abbey for
the soul of Hugh his brother. (Lords Honor Clitheroe

Note: It is apparent that Robert Lacy returned and
restored because we find him confirming several grants
to churches made by Hugh de Laval during the time of
possession of Nostel.

1130 Robert Lacy refused to confirm church Whalley to
priory of St John Pontefract (Whalley Chartulary)
1130 Robert Lacy died and interred in abbey Kirstall
(Ch St John)

Sincerely Yours,

Paul Bulkley
