Historical Background

I have just as strong an interest in the history of my family as I do the genealogy of my family. I suppose you could call it social history.

I recently read a couple things that were interesting. One ancestor had his property taken away from him and was referred to as homeless. Does anyone know where a family of nobles would go to if the king/queen confiscated their property? I doubt their families or friends would want to make the king/queen angry by taking them in. Could they have maybe gone to a monastery or something for shelter?

The other thing I read was that an ancestor Wm Saye was mortally wounded in battle. There were some Knights Templar who covered his body with their banner and took his body to their temple and since he had been excommunicated and was not allowed to be buried, they put him in an iron or lead(can't remember which) and hung him from a tree in their courtyard. Later a new Pope revoked the excommunication and his family wanted to bury him, but the Templars buried him somewhere secret. The implication is that they didn't want his family to have his body. Do you suppose he had been a Templar or was made one right before death? And if so, did they have a practice of only burying their members on their property? I also know that Wm Marshall went to a Templar Monastery just before death and so was buried in their church. That is what gave me the idea that maybe it was a policy to bury their members on Templar Property.

Does anyone on the list know of good sources I could find the answers in? I don't even know what the purpose of the lead casket hanging from a tree was. He could have been buried in unconcecrated land and then later reburied in consecrated land. I don't think they were afraid he would turn into a vampire. LOL

Who and When? His fate may be known. How do you know that the king or
queen personally confiscated his home? Do you know why the
confiscation occurred? Bronwen
