Sykes of Leeds
Dear Listers
Does anyone have references/reference material for the Sykes family of
Leeds. I have an Alice (Alyce) Sykes m.1625 (at St. Peter's Leeds)
Michael Hutchinson of Shipscar/Sheepscar/Brigate Leeds. Both were
buried in the churchyard of St. Peters: Alice d 16 Oct 1653 and
Michael d 2 July 1667. I have been unable to find the will of Michael
Hutchinson in the archives at York or Sheepscar but do have the will
interestingly enough of his son Michael Hutchinson also d. 1667.
(after his father according to his will) of Lofthouse near Rothwell,
York.
Regards
Vivien

Thanks Chris for reintroducing me to this material on the web. I had
found it a few years ago before it was as comprehensive as it is now.
My best bet at this point I guess is to hire a researcher to look at
the material contained in DDSY(3)/1 which contains the wills of
Richard Sykes of Leeds m.1597/8 Deborah Mason as Alyce/Alice Sykes my
g*grandmother could possibly descend from this union. When I retire
moving to England to continue my research will keep me busy.

Possibly, if you only want the wills, you may find that they are on LDS film
and so available to you at your local LDS FHC.

There was a story on the local news some months ago about a proposed
exhumation of Mark Sykes' body with the intent of obtaining a DNA sample
of the Spanish 'flu virus. This was a major pandemic with huge
mortality and it was being argued that being able to examine its
structure might help deal with the next pandemic. I haven't heard any

Well, I didn't go through the whole book, mind you, but according to "The
Registers of the Parish Church of Leeds (1891)", there was a Michael
Hutchinson, of Brigate, who died of drowning and was buried on 15 Mar
1615/16.
There are several references to this guy all throughout the book regarding
marriages, birth of his children, etc.
I found the book on Google books. If you want to check it out and see if
it's your man, the URL is as follows:
