Dear Newsgroup ~

Complete Peerage, 2 (1912): 426-427 gives an account of Bartholomew de
Burghersh, K.G., 4th Lord Buirghersh, who died in 1369. Regarding his
second wife, the following information is provided:

"He married 2ndly before August 1366 Margaret (_____), widow of
(_____) Pichard. He died 5 April 1369. His widow married, 3rdly, as
1st wife, William Burcestre, and died 1 July 1393." END OF QUOTE.

When the footnotes are checked, no documentation is provided for any
of these statements. The only comment the editor makes is to indicate
that Dugdale erroneously identified Bartholomew de Burghersh's wife,
Margaret, as the sister of Bartholomew, Lord Badlesmere.

In previous posts in the soc.genealogy.medieval newsgroup, the above
named Margaret has since been correctly identified as the widow of
Henry Picard, citizen and vintner of London (who was living in 1363),
and the daughter and coheir of Thomas Gisors of London [Reference:
Roskell et al., The House of Commons 1386-1421, 2 (1992): 410-412
(biog. of Sir William Burcester)].

In the contemporary record presented below, it is further indicated
that Margaret Gisors married her third husband, Sir William Burcester,
before 16 July 1382.

Katherine Engaine who is one of the defendants named in the record
below is surely the same person as Katherine de Courtenay, widow of
Thomas Engaine, 3rd Lord Engaine, for whom please see Complete
Peerage, 5 (1926): 77-81 (sub Engaine).

For the royalty buffs, I should mention that Sir Bartholomew de
Burghersh, 4th Lord Burghersh, is a lineal descendant of King John and
King Henry II of England.

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah
