Lacy of Pontefract

I recently quoted Chartulary St John regarding the
1123 resignation of Hugh Lacy Abbot of Selby, the
resignation possibly being because of the banishment
of his brother Robert Lacy.

Subscriber W.J.Honson responded "So he resigned 20
years after brother was banished. Does not make sense"

I suggest that his study and understanding of the
records is desirable.

1103 Robert Lacy was banished for supporting Robert
Belesme

1106 Robert Lacy lost fee of Pontefract to Henry I for
favoring the wrong man.

1107 Despite this the fee of Pontefract was restored
to Robert Lacy.

1110 Janet Burton claims Robert Lacy founded religous
house of Kirksty York.

1118/19 Wightman states that Hugh de Laval succeeded
to the Lacy estates in Lincolnshire

1122 Charters of St John Pontefract claims that Laval
acquired Pontefract estate.

1122 Laval's charter confirms all gifts made by Robert
Lacy to St John Pontefract.

1121 Chartulary St John Pontefract Chronology records
that Robert Lacy was again dispossessed and banished,
this time finally, of his estates to the value of 60
kt fees to Hugh de Laval.

One has the impression that Henry I was unwilling to
pull down the shutters on Robert Lacy. The property
remained in the family through Laval.

The final banishment took place perhaps 1114-1118 but
the estate remained in the family.

Hugh Lacy Abbot of Selby probably resigned 1123 due to
old age rather than in disgust of the treatment of his
brother. Certainly that banishment did not take place
20 years earlier (1103) as suggested.

Sincerely Yours,

Paul Bulkley
