Portuguese Royal constancy ??

Legg inn av Leo van de Pas » 03 okt 2007 00:54:20

According to ES King Sancho I of Portugal had many children, legitimate and illegitimate. I am not sure whether the illegitimates are clearly recorded as to whom their mother was. It appears that he had two children by Maria Ayres de Fornellos and six by Maria Paez de Ribera.

The children by Maria Paez de Ribera (if I see it correctly) were born from before 1174 to Constanza born in 1204 and one more child after that.
Were they all by Maria Paez de Ribera, or were they by different unknown women?

With many thanks.

ES is not far from what is accepted by actual portuguese genealogy.
Eleven children legitimate and eight illegitimate, two by Maria Aires
de Fornelos (all names in actual portuguese orthography) and six by
D.Maria Pais Ribeira "a Ribeirinha".
The dates are 1176-1198 for the legitimate ca. 1200 for both by Maria
Aires de Fornelos and ca. 1200 to ca. 1210 to the six by "a
Ribeirinha".
None of the illegitimates has a documented birthdate and really I do
not know if we can trust those proposed dates. At least the gap for
the six by "a Ribeirinha" is not consistent with her own legitimate
children (two in the same period) what if true would leave doubts for
the paternity of all of them.
Maybe D. Sancho I only had illegitimate offspring after the death of
his wife (Dulce de Barcelona died 1.9.1198 in Coimbra) or the given
dates are a result of some wishfull thinking by historians with moral
concerns. Both are possible.
D.Constança Sanches (b.1204 in ES) is the youngest and b. ca. 1210.
Illegitimate b. 1274 (before D. Sancho I's marriage) are not known in
portuguese most common history books and could not be by any of the
two because D.Maria Pais Ribeira would be about 4 years old and Maria
Aires de Fornelos not yet born.

Best regards,
Francisco
