Dear Douglas and others,
Roger, one of the youngest sons of
Alexander Comyn, Earl of Buchan is known to have been married to Margery, widow of
Duncan de Frendraught by 1310, Duncan seems to have been killed in December
of 1308 during Robert Brus` herschipl of Buchan. Roger had probably been
married before as his father died in 1290. As a third son, his brother Alexander`s
daughters would have succeeded to the Earldom before He would. He is known to
have survived to at least 1322; longer if the Roger Comyn who married Agnes
was He rather than a son. if He had any. Is He known to have left an IPM ?
Sincerely,

Dear James,

I think it unlikely that Roger Comyn survived past 1310 or so, or
that he had any legitimate issue.

1. He is usually accounted as being the
2nd son of Earl Alexander and his wife
Elizabeth de Quincy [SP II: 254-5]. This
too from Alan Young [Medieval Scotland:
Crown, Lordship and Community, p. 196],
with regard to Earl Alexander:

' Also, he gave his second son Roger the
manor of East Farndon in Northamptonshire,
and wrote to Edward I asking that, if
Roger's right to that property were
questioned, then the king's agents should
come to Elizabeth in Scotland to obtain
her recognisance... ' [cites Placito de
Quo Warranto (Record Comm., 1818), p.
539; and PRO, Special Collections,
Ancient Petitions, S.C. 8/197, no. 9816]

2. Clearly the English recognition of
the rights to the Earldom of Buchan
went to the daughters of Earl John's
brother, Sir Alexander Comyn, by
Joan le Latimer. Henry de Beaumont,
husband of Alice Comyn, was
recognized as Earl of Buchan [see
Buchan account in SP; also
SP II:258-9]. Beaumont was one of
the 'Disinherited' involved in the
Balliol invasion of 1333/4.

If Roger was the 2nd son as held elsewhere, he certainly must
have died s.p. before the Beaumont right to Buchan (English) was
recognized. Margaret Comyn, the other heiress, was married to John of
Ross; there was no issue of that marriage.

The name Roger was not that uncommon, and may have also come to
the Comyn family from the Buchan side (the father of Fergus, Earl of
Buchan was named Roger). Perhaps the Roger Comyn of 1322 was of
another line of descent (possibly Comyn of Ulceby, Lincs.).

Cheers,

John
