Dear Newsgroup ~

In the series of references to kinsfolk which I've posted from time to
time here on the newsgroup, I've presented numerous examples of
kinship where the relationship between the parties is easily spotted.
The following is such a case. I find that Elizabeth de Beaumont (died
1400), Lady Audley, is styled "cousin" of Henry le Despenser (died
1406), Bishop of Norwich in a contemporary letter [References: Legge,
Anglo-Norman Letters & Petitions (Anglo-Norman Text Soc. 3) (1941):
383-384].

Elizabeth de Beaumont, Lady Audley, was the widow of Nicholas de
Audley, 3rd Lord Audley. She is known to have been a daughter of
Henry de Beaumont, Knt., 1st Lord Beaumont, by his wife, Alice Comyn
[Reference: Complete Peerage, 1 (1910): 340 (sub Audley)]. Studying
the respective ancestries of Lady Audley and Bishop Despenser, I find
that the two parties were related in the 4th and 5th degrees of
kindred (or, if you prefer, 3rd cousins once removed) by virtue of
their common descent from Sir Roger de Quincy, 2nd Earl of Winchester,
Constable of Scotland, died 1264, as shown below:

1. Roger de Quincy, Knt., 2nd Earl of Winchester, Constable of
Scotland, died 1264.
2. Margaret de Quincy, married William de Ferrers, Knt., Earl of
Derby.
3. William de Ferrers, Knt., of Groby, Leicestershire, married Anne
(said to be Despenser).
4. William de Ferrers, Knt., 1st Lord Ferrers of Groby, married Ellen
de Segrave.
5. Anne de Ferrers, married Edward le Despenser, Knt.
6. Henry le Despenser, Bishop of Norwich, died 1406.

1. Roger de Quincy, Knt., 2nd Earl of Winchester, Constable of
Scotland, died 1264.
2. Elizabeth (or Isabel) de Quincy, married Alexander Comyn, 6th Earl
of Buchan.
3. Alexander Comyn, Knt., of Buchan (in Scotland), married Joan le
Latimer.
4. Alice Comyn, married Henry de Beaumont, Knt., 1st Lord Beaumont,
Earl of Buchan and Moray.
5. Elizabeth de Beaumont, died 1400, married Nicholas de Audley, Knt.,
3rd Lord Audley.

The above set of relationships is a very typical of kinships I find
stated in records around 1400.

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah
