Edward Southworth (again)

Dear Leo and others,
I discovered a very interesting two part
post written by Jim Stevens on Gen- Medieval on March 30, 1997 concerning proof
of Edward being the son of Thomas and Rosamund Southworth (nee Lister) of
Samlesbury, Lancashire rather than Edward the son of Richard of Clarborough,
Nottingham who died at Wellam, Nottingham in 1621.
The reasons are as follows:
1 Thomas , brother of Edward of
Clarborough and Wellam `s will was probated July 17, 1612 at Wellam, well before
Edward`s May 18, 1613 marriage at Leyden to Alice Carpenter when his brother
Thomas bore witness to the marriage.

2 Sir Francis Walsingham was a very
good friend of Thonas Southworth of Samlesbury and lived across from Heneage
House, Duke`s Place, Aldgate, London where Edward Southworth of Samlesbury
and London was living when his friend Robert Cushman sent him a letter on
August 17, 1620. Walsingham was Elizabeth I`s spymaster and arranged for
Thomas` father Sir John, a moderate catholic to be placed to Thomas` custody. Thomas
had lived in London from 1584-1594 and his wife`s brother Edward Lister who
was one of Elizabeth I`s physicians was also living in Aldgate at that time.
In 1594 Thomas was allowed to take his father back to Samlesbury where Sir John
died the dollowing year.

3 Alice Bradford had an embrodiery of a
coat of arms Silver with black chevron and crosslets which were the colors of
Southworth of Samlesbury in the various herald`s rolls. Southworth of
Clarborough bore a silver shield with red chevron and crosslets.

4 Alice Carpenter was born in Wrington ,
Somerset a few miles from another of the Southworth of Salmesbury family
possessions.

All this considered Alice Carpenter`s
husband Edward Southworth was in all probability the one born Aldgate, London son
of Thomas Southworth of Salmesbury and Rosamund Lister.

Sincerely,
James W Cummings
