Newsgroup under attack

Legg inn av taf » 24 sep 2007 02:34:33

We are currently under attack from a robotic poster that is forging
addresses. The posts at least appear to be coming from a news feed at
Time Warner Cable, but are forged to appear to come form previous
posters to certain crossposted threads. The posts are likewise
crossposted, with a (random, it appears) group added for good measure.
The contents are gibberish. There is nothing that can be done about
this except notify Time Warner. Please ignore the posts (I know for
the Digest readers this is hardly possible). Let this serve as notice
that the posts are not coming from the addresses listed and not have
every one exacerbate the problem by denying them in turn.

And remember, crossposting draws flies!

This spate of sporging has probably come via the royalty newsgroup
that Hines regularly cross-posts to. To date, the gibberish it has
generated has been far more interesting than his own posts, but
members of the group might like to know which troll bears some of the
responsibility for it infecting us here.

In fairness, however, Hines cannot take all the credit, because
Richardson has now also amplified his own cross-posting trollery by
adding the royalty group to his posts - as if that group had not
already suffered enough OT material lately.

Sheesh.

I can't say for certain that it came from that specific group, but it
is not unlikely. Every one of the posts that appeared in soc.gen.med
were in threads, and forging names of posters, who had crossposted to
a specific set of other newsgroups - it clearly came from one of
these. This is one of the possible negative consequences of
crossposting. Whether targeted on simply random, had these crossposts
not been made, the group in general and the posters in particular
would not have been subjected to this attack. You would think this
would have served as a lesson to certain participants, but it seems
not to have gotten through.

We now have a second addition to the ranks of bullheaded posters who
are going to behave inappropriately no matter what the consequences.
Due to their behavior in initiating crossposted threads, and even
sneaking crossposts into existing threads for no apparent reason and
without even the courtesy of indicating that this has been done, this
places a greater burden on responders to posts from them to pay close
attention to the newsgroups and remove all inappropriate crossposts,
every time you respond to one of their posts.
