TAG's schedule--and Ryurikids

Legg inn av Gjest » 22 sep 2007 18:46:32

We have been receiving inquiries about the schedule of The American
Genealogist [TAG], and have been gratified by both the tolerance of
our readership and by the many compliments we have been receiving. TAG
has gotten further behind this past year because recently it has taken
us four months to complete an issue, and with a quarterly, it should
be three months. The issue that will be in the mail to subscribers
(along with the separate index and title-page/contents pamphlets for
last year) in about two weeks took us five months to prepare.

(Before going further, I need to emphasize that there is no
possibility that TAG will be discontinued, even though it stopped
making a [very modest] profit some time ago. "Jacobus's Journal," now
85 years old, remains too significant for us to entertain such a
possibility.)

Many know about my health problems several years ago. I have fully
recovered, but the frustratingly low recovery was a major factor in
the schedule slow down. This past summer, my mother died; she was 88
and had had Alzheimer's for about five years. Her whole family was
present with her at her Florida home as frequently as possible. That,
of course, took priority.

The issue that will be distributed shortly is dated "January 2007
(published September 2007)." It is the first issue of the volume 82.
The April and July issues are moving along rapidly. My coeditors (Joe
Anderson and Bob Aderson, who aren't related) and I will meet in about
three weeks at the annual FASG meeting to discuss future issues and
ways of getting back on schedule. One thing that is certain to help is
that I have--after 37 years--retired from academics.

Getting back on schedule will necessarily take a while because of our
proofreading process. The preliminary page proofs are read by four
people, who send me their corrections. Then another set of page proofs
goes out to my two coeditors, who send me whatever remaining problems
they detect. Then I send the issue to the printer, who sends me "blue-
line" proofs. These I carefully read and print out substitute pages if
any more problems are found. TAG is probably more free of misprints
than any other journal in the field.

Our lead article in the forthcoming issue is the first part of a two-
part study by Norman Ingham and Christian Raffensperger of the early
Ryurikds, the dynasty that ruled 'Kiev Rus" and then modern Russia
until the Romanoffs. To quote the article: "many people can claim
descent from them [the Ryurikds] through the marriage of King Henry I
of France with Anna, daughter of Grand Prince Yaroslav I the Wise of
Kiev."

A later 2007 issue will probably include further material on the male-
line ancestry of John Whitney of Watertown, Mass. And of course,
Leslie Mahler will continue his superb English-origin articles.

I am pasting the contents listing of the issue after my "sign-off."
