Dear all,

I thought that with the appearance online of the first part of VCH
North Riding a couple of weeks back, that I would at last be able to
find out more about the de Siggeston family, who were tenants in Kirby
Sigston the early part of the 14th century. Whilst answering many of
my previous questions, a few new ones have now appeared.

Briefly, the text shows the following tenants of the Bishop of Durham
in Kirby Sigston:

1. Michael son of Michael, held a quarter of a knight's fee at the
beginning of the 13th century [1]

2. Michael de Ryhil held 3 carucates at the time of Kirkby's Inquest
in 1284-5 [3]

3. John, son of Michael, de Sigston, m. Joan Colville [1,2]

4. John, son of John son of Michael, de Sigston, lord in 1313, m. Joan
Maunsell [1]

5. John, son of John, de Sigston, lord in 1327 & 1348, d.s.p [1,4,5]

So my question is, who was Michael, father of the first John de
Sigston?

(i) Was he Michael son of Michael de Ryhil, who died about 1254 ? [6,
7].

(ii) Or was he Michael son of Thomas son of Michael de Ryhil who died
ca. March 20, 1291/2, when his heir was his daughter Isabel, aged 14
and the wife of John Fitz Hugh ? [8]

(iii) Or was he Michael son of Michael son of Michael de Ryhil, a
younger brother of Thomas, for whom I can find little or no evidence ?

(iv) Or was he someone else called Michael ?

I'd be grateful for any help towards answering this question.

Regards,

John
