Sibyl, wife of Sir Otes Botetourt, alleged to be a Deincourt

Dear Newsgroup ~

Searching about for information yesterday on the internet for the
baronial Botetourt family, I came across an extensive pedigree of the
Knyvet family dating from c.1651, which pedigree was published in 1906
in Norfolk Antiquarian Miscellany. This material can be found at the
following weblink:

http://books.google.com/books?id=uUIuAA ... A2-PA81,M1

On page 83, the following information is presented regarding John
Knyvet (died 1418) and his wife, Joan Botetourt, the daughter and
heiress of John Botetourt, Knt., of Mendlesham, Suffolk, and Hamerton,
Huntingdonshire, by Katherine, daughter of Robert de Weyland, Knt., of
Charsfield, Suffolk. The account below incorrectly identifies Joan
Botetourt's paternal grandfather, Sir Otes Botetourt, Knt. (died
1345), as John Botetourt. It also states that Joan's paternal
grandmother was named Sibyl (correct given name), and that she was the
daughter and heiress of "Domini de Dainecourte" [i.e., Deincourt].

"Johannes Knivet Miles filius et heres pdci Johannes Knivet militis
duxit Johanam filiam et heredem solam dni Boutetort de Mendlesham qui
Johannes [Boutetort] duxit Catharinam filiarum et heredim Robti
Wayland militis cujus pater erat Johannes Boutetorte qui duxit
Sibillam una filiarum et heredum ... Domini de Dainecourte ... Iste
Johannes Knyvett miles habuit exitum Johem Margareta et
Elizabetham." [Reference: Norfolk Antiquarian Miscellany, 2nd ser. Pt.
1 (1906): 83].

This pedigree is the first indication that I've seen that Sibyl, wife
of Sir Otes Botetourt, might have been a Deincourt. It doesn't
appear possible that she was a daughter of Edmund Deincourt, Lord
Deincourt, but she might have been the daughter and heiress of his
younger son, William Deincourt, who Stirnet says died in 1314 at the
Battle of Stirling.

The author of the Knyvet pedigree appears to have been trying to
justify all the family quarterings which the family claimed as of
1651. That is why Sybil Botetourt's maiden name is given and why she
is specifically called an heiress of the Deincourt family. For all I
know, it is probably correct.

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah
