Angevin tombs in Naples

Legg inn av Gjest » 15 sep 2007 16:14:56

While in southern Italy this past fortnight, I spent a day in Naples,
and made my way to the church of St Chiara, the traditional burial
place of Neapolitan royalty, of various hues.

The most impressive of the mediaeval tombs which have been restored in
this huge, lofty auditorium of a church is that of King Robert (of
Anjou), called The Wise. He died in 1343. His statue sits enthroned
above the high altar, underneath a canopy of France Ancient.

There are four other royal tombs on-topic here, including those of
Robert's son, Charles of Calabria, and his daughter-in-law, Marie de
Valois - neither of which has an effigy. An Angevin effigy tomb
stands by the west door, but the lighting was too poor either to
photograph or to read its Latin inscription. Amazingly, I could not
find a guide-book of any kind.

I have photos of King Robert which I am happy to send if anyone is
interested.

Kind regards, Michael

I would be delighted to have the photos of King Robert of Naples or
any other member of that glorious dynasty.Unfortunately,I had no
chance to visit Naples and see burial place of angevin kings and
queens.
Thank you.
