Dear Spencer, Richard, Will, Todd, et al.,

Following is the pedigree I have showing a descent from William
Malet, seigneur de Graville, down to the issue of Sir Miles Stapleton
of Bedale (d. 1466). I have not traced this further as given below,
but it is known that through his daughter Joan (or Jane), wife of Sir
Christopher Harcourt, that a descent runs via Harcourt of Stanton
Harcourt, Knyvett, Finch (earls of Nottingham), Cavendish-Bentinck and
the Bowes-Lyon earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne to the late Queen
Mother, and hence to Queen Elizabeth II. If there is a prior British
(English or other) monarch with a descent from William Malet, I do not
see it - at least via this descent.

There is (as hinted below) a previously held descent from William
Malet, that holds that Lucy or Lucia, wife of Ranulf le Meschin, earl
of Chester (d. 1129) was the daughter of Turold the Sheriff, of
Spalding and Bucknall, co. Lincs., by a daughter of William Malet.
I'd be interested in knowing if this has been either proven or
disproven: there myriad descents from Ranulf and Lucia, including many
British (Scots and English) monarchs well earlier than QE II.

Cheers,

John

Tim Powys-Lybbe shows a line which goes to the Malets of Curry Malet.
These two lines reunite at Goddard, close ancestor of Ironmonger.

Thanks for giving the generations I had missing to connect this line back to William Malet, Seigneur of Graville, Normandy who was one of the Companions.

At this point, the line bifurcates descending via Richard above, who was 3rd Lord Poynings to inter alia James Cudworth Governor of Mass and thus to hundreds of American descendents.

Can anyone advise whether William Malet Seigneur de Graville
is as I keep getting from others doing GREVILLE family history, an ancestor
of
Francis Greville, Earl Brooke, Baron brooke of Beauchamps court, Earl of
Warwick de Brooke, etc. 1719 - 1773.
I have never seen anything to suggest/show it but they are persistent that
it is so, but cant give
source or reasoning as yet.

While this has been 'theorized', I don't know that any serious scholar
accepts it. In fact, it loks like one of those attempts to 'correct'
an impossible forgery, which made Lucy herself daughter of Alfgar. In
fact, Lucy was not daughter of William either, but of the next
generation, a granddaughter (it seems).
