Mering and Basset of Fledburgh or Brailesford

Back in May of 2006 a thread discussed the family of Basset of Fledburgh [or Fledborough] and theorized as to its connection with other Basset families. In particular, mention was made of a Thomas Basset of Brailesford or Fledburgh who married Margery Mering. Upon further checking, it appears that there were two different Thomas Bassets who may have both married (different) women named Margery Mering. Also, it is likely inaccurate to refer to Thomas Basset of Brailesford as also being "of Fledburgh".

Paget's ancestry of Prince Charles gives the following descent for Basset of Fledburgh (unfortunately without sources):
William Basset of Fledburgh;m. Margaret NN
Thomas Basset of Fledburgh [wife unidentified]
William Basset of Fledburgh (d. before 1442); m. Catherine Stanhope of Rampton (she m. (2) NN Tunstall)
Thomas Basset of Fledburgh (d. 1493); m. Margery Mering (dau. of William)
Catherine Basset; m. Thomas Sutton of Aram (d. 1520)

[Paget also says that William Basset of Fledburgh and Catherine Stanhope of Rampton also had a daughter Mary (d. 1539) who mar. William Beaumont of Cole Orton, but as discussed in the earlier thread this is chronologically flawed and is contradicted by Basset pedigrees who place her as a dau. of William Basset of Blore.]

Paget shows the following for Basset of Brailsford (although omitting the Mering marriage, which is shown in various Shirley pedigrees, including "Stemmata Shirleiana" which refers to Thomas as "of Fledborough and Brailesford"):
Thomas Basset of Brailesford; m. Margery Mering, dau. of William
Joan Basset; m. Sir Ralph Shirley (d. 1420)

Clearly, for chronological reasons the Thomas Basset and Margery Mering whose daughter mar. Sir Ralph Shirley (d. 1420) cannot be the same Thomas Basset and Margery Mering whose dau. mar. Thomas Sutton of Aram (d. 1520). In addition, at least one Shirley pedigree says that Joan Basset, wife of Sir Ralph Shirley, was the sole heir of her father (her brother Sir Richard d. sp) - i.e., no male surviviors in this line.

So it appears that Thomas Basset of Brailesford is a distinct individual from Thomas Basset of Fledburgh, but they were probably confused by pedigree compilers. However, there is some evidence, surprisingly, that both of these Thomas Bassets may have married women named Margery Mering. A pedigree of the Mering family in the Harleian Society edition of the visitations of Nottinghamshire (1569 and 1614, HSP vol. 4) has two different Margery Merings, both said to be married to Thomas Basset "of Fledborough". An earlier Margery, dau. of Sir William and Maud Bekering, is given the Basset marriage based on Harleian MSS 1400. Three generations later, her grand-niece Margery, dau. of Sir William and "...Laughton of Yorkshire", is given a Basset marriage based on Harleian MSS 1555. The original compiler of the pedigree appears to have noticed the two Margerys and their Basset marriages but does not indicate that it's wrong.

The later Margery is identified by Paget as the one who mar. Thomas Basset of Fledburgh (d. 1493); Paget gives her mother as Anne, dau. of John Langton of Farnley. The earlier Margery could thus be the one who mar. Thomas Basset of Brailesford, and this could explain the mis-identification of this Thomas as being "of Fledburgh".

Admittedly this is speculative in parts and could use better support, but it doesn't seem implausible. Comments are welcomed.
