With further reference to the 1276 legal action John
Kirkeby of Irleth (v) Thomas Ashton regarding the
manor of Ashton (Amounderess Lancashire), it appears
that the Ashtons were tenants subject to an annual
payment of 1d, and performing the services due to the
chief lords of the fee.

Earliest records found to date regarding the Ashton
family include Arthur Ashton witness to a Richard
Bussel charter to the Abbey of Evesham 1153-1160.

1177/78 John Count Mortain granted Ashton
(Amounderess) to Arthur Ashton in free thange by
service 10/- year.

1190/1215 Orme de Ashton was living (Farrer)

1201/02 Peter de Ashton debt recorded to king 2M

Has anyone any further information of this family in
the 1100s?

Thank you

Paul Bulkley.
