Sir John Newton married Margaret Poyntz and thereby had a daughter Frances Newton who by marrying William Brooke, 10th Lord Cobham created many descendents.

It has been said that Sir John was alternatively either the son of

A) Richard Newton d 1500 by his wife Lettice Hampton
OR
B) John Newton by his wife Margaret Gorges

I shall now prove that the first case is wrong, and provide some added details to this wrongly connected family.

This is because Sir Henry Capell has a Proof of Age in which, not only does he name his father Sir Giles Capel, but the proof of age is in regards in particular to his *mother* "Jatbelle" (not Isabel) NEWTON.

The proof of age is in regards to the fact that he is his *mother's* heir, and she is dead (which pushes by terminus death date for her back 30 years!). Not only that, but it states clearly that she was co-heiress of her own father Richard Newton. Therefore there was no brother who had heirs, living past 1526 and so Sir John Newton is *right out*.

We had already known that Henry was born in 1505, but the proof of age states that he was born on the Feast of Saint Crispin and Crispian (whenever that was).

The witnesses state that he was born on the 25 Oct 1505 in the parish of St Bartholomew the Less, "in the house of William Capell, deceased, late mayor of the city"

Hi Will,

The feast day of Saints Crispin and Crispinian (patron saints of
cobblers, tanners, and leather workers) is October 25.
