Mediaeval Midlands (#2)

Today I was in the Midlands and took photos of the following:

(1) The episcopal tombs in Eccleshall church, Staffordshire.

Eccleshall Castle was formerly one of the seats of the Bishops of
Lichfield and Coventry, and several of their lordships are
commemorated by monuments in the chancel of the church.

These include an alabaster tomb with effigies of Bishop Overall
(1580-1609) and his family; his second wife was a cousin of the Earls
of Shrewsbury. The tomb was erected during the Bishop's lifetime.

There is also a tomb with effigies of Bishop Thomas Bentham
(1560-1579) and his wife Maud nee Fawcon (although this is now in what
serves as the choir vestry: a dark, cramped room at the back the
church, and the tomb is covered in piles of paper and old hymn-books,
which I cleared away with a vengeance). Bentham was the ancestor of
Jeremy Bentham, the reformer and philosopher (1748-1832).

(2) The effigy-tomb of Sir Nicholas Montgomery (died 1435) at Cubley,
Derbyshire.

I am happy to forward copies as usual to anyone interested.
