Another Burgundian Question

Legg inn av Dana S. Leslie » 02 sep 2007 16:19:18

I have a Guntheuca who married both Chlodomer, K. Orleans, and Chlothar I,
K. Metz. She is given as the daughter of Gundobad II, and the dates don't
seem right for this Gundobad to be the same as the son of Gundovech. So was
Gundobad II a son of Gundobad I, or of his brother, Chilperic II, or what?

Thank you.

I have a Guntheuc listed as the spouse of the Merovingian Clodomir,
king of Orleans. His brother Clotaire I, king of Soissons, had four
spouses, none of which were named Guntheuc. [P. J. Geary,_Before
France and Germany_(Oxford, 1988), 232.]

I only find two sons, Sigismund and Godomar, as the children of
Gundobad (d. 516), king of the Burgundians; but there is no problem
with chronology if Guntheuc is a daughter. I am not aware that there
was any Gundobad II. [H. Wolfram,_The Roman Empire and Its Germanic
People_(Berkeley and Los Angeles, 1997), 251.]

Christopher,

It wouldn't surprise me at all if Chlothar I took Clodomir's wife as his own
concubine, when he took Chlodomir's kingdom (He is recorded as having done
similar things, in the process of dispossessing his brothers.), and never
actually married her by the bishops' lights.

My question still remains, however: how was Chlodomir's widow Guntheuc
(whatever became of her) related to the house of Gundioc? You suggest she
may have been the daughter of the only Gundebad we've definitely identified,
the one who died in 516. Plausible; but can anyone confirm this guess?

Thank you.
