A little more Hopton, Cecily Hopton to Sir George Marshall

It isn't every day I find a new Cecil5 that isn't in my database already.

In the great Tudor quest that we've launced I happened to stumble across a reference to a "Cecily" Hopton, daughter of that Sir Owen Hopton, Knt who as son of Anne OWEN is said to be a grandson of that David Tudor who is said-to-be the illegitimate son of Owen Tudor by some unnamed mistress.

At any rate, Anne Owen's mother, to me, is unclear. David Owen is given two or possibly three wives for one I have a shortest-royal-descent from Henry III, for the other from Edward III, for the third alleged wife no royal descent yet.

The non-royal wife being Mary Bohun, daughter of John Bohun of Cowdray by his wife Anne Arderne. With names like that they must have a royal descent somewhere.

At any rate, by one of these wives, David Owen is father of that Anne Owen who married Sir Arthur Hopton, Knt of Westwood, Suffolk, died 16 Aug 1555

Arthur Hopton and Anne Owen had at least three children including Charles Hopton, and Margaret (Hopton) Cokett wife of Anthony Cockett of South Myms, Herts.

But the child who we're interested in today is Sir Owen Hopton. He was knighted in 1561, born in or near 1533 and buried 26 Sep 1591 at Stepney, Middlesex.

His wife is said-to-be Anne Itchingham, dau of somebody called "Sir Edward Itchingham, Knt" who I haven't traced but who sounds promising.

For this connection see CP "Chandos of Sudeley"

Sir Owen Hopton, Knt d 1591 by his wife Anne had at least or exactly four children. I had had Arthur, Anne (Hopton) Wentworth and Mary (Hopton) Brydges already in my database. And they are repeated many times in secondary sources.

Their sister Cecily gets constantly overlooked probably because she married just a lowly Knight.

Cecily Hopton by George Marshall was the mother of a sole heir, their daughter Anne Marshall. Sir George Marshall was equerry to King James I.

George is buried 27 Jul 1636 at Putney, while Cecily was buried 23 Apr 1625 at the Athelstan Chapel at Malmesbury.

Admin of George's estate was granted to his daughter Anne Marshall and her husband Marmaduke Marshall. I cannot at this point say whether these two were cousins but that they in fact were a married couple is proven by this grant of administration where they are specifically called Anne the legitimate daughter of George....

At any rate, several books mention that Anne and Marmaduke had three or four children, usually given as unspecified females if at all.

Three daughters are baptised and extracted from the parish register of Malmesbury
Margaret 28 May 1627
Cicely 23 Oct 1629
Frances 23 Mar 1630/1

Either Marmaduke then remarried, or there are two contemporary Marmaduke Marshall's. Anne was living in 1636 when made joint-admin of her father's estate, and Marmaduke is known to have been alive at least a few years more as in 1639 he was Gentleman Sewer to the Duke of Lennox.

Comments, additions, and tossing of rotten produce appreciated.
