Some days ago there were postings on the many errors in genealogy databases
that display information that is obviously wrong and the refusal of some of
the "experts" to correct these errors. These errors are passed on and on and
on forever.
The following is a terrible error in Azorean (Portuguese) genealogy -.and it
will go on forever.
James N. Guill's book _A History of the Azores Islands_ has become the
Bible of Azorean research. The book sells for hundreds of dollars when found on
the internet.
One of the early colonizers of the Azores, was Willen van der Hagen (later
known as Guilherme da Silveira). On page 139, according to Guill, "he was
born in Bruges and was the grandson of John the Fearless, Duke of Burgundy..
He married Margarida of Savoy, daughter of Duke Amadeus VIII of Savoy, who was
elected as antipope Felix V." That is the source. Can one believe that a
royal went to colonize the Azores and put up with all the hardships in a new
land?
In Portugal, the University of Minho's "Nucleo de Estudos de Populacao e
Sociedade" there is a beginning database of the church records from two of the
Azorean islands, Pico and Faial. This is a wonderful site for Azorean
researchers and the only errors there are human. Some of these church records go
back to the 1500s. When the church records end the errors begin - and there are
many. The expert from Faial for the University of Minho in Portugal is a
descendant of Silveira. He has been told several times of his error but he
refuses to correct it. Today there are many known descendants of Silveira and
Margarite. I am one, myself.
Margarida de Savoy married three times. She is buried in Stutgart.

Re: Experts Who Will Not Correct Errors...
Quite True...
MANY of these on-line genealogical databases are riddled with errors and the
database owners will not correct their errors.
The same thing is eminently true of Leo van de Pas's database --
"GENEALOGICS".
<http://www.genealogics.org/index.php>
Leo even puts living people and recently deceased people up on his database
WITHOUT their permission or the permission of their heirs -- and traces
THEIR ANCESTRY.
Leo takes the view that if he has the information from someone, regardless
of the validity of the information, it is somehow "In The Public Domain" and
up it goes -- errors and all.
In a thoroughly disreputable and disingenuous fashion, Leo takes the
position that if something is completely wrong "Someone Will Tell Him" and
then he can make the correction, or ask for complete proof from the
complainer "As To Why It Is Wrong, And What Is Correct".
Of course an alleged Stuyvesant Descendant or ten, who had NO desire to be
put up in Leo's database, probably does not even KNOW Leo van de Pas has
posted it for public access and they certainly have no desire to do his
genealogical work for him, or pay to have it done, and then see some "TRUE"
version, slapped up, with themselves as the source, which they don't want to
see posted in his database either....
Which Leo may well then PUBLISH in PRINT -- at a profit.
Peter Stewart, for one, made it QUITE CLEAR to me he did NOT want to be put
up in Leo's database and he did NOT want his ancestry posted up there --
which is, of course, entirely his prerogative.
You will note that Leo has made an exception for Peter and Peter's ancestry
is NOT posted up there -- although Peter certainly has it and has worked on
it for many years -- so it is quite well wrung out.

It was wrung out before I was born, and long before I looked at it. I have
made some corrections in the high-medieval period, most of them topics of
discussion here over the years.
Leo has not asked me to provide my ancestry. As far as I know, compiling
descents down to living people without their knowledge or permission is
quite legal - if not, Burkes and especially Debretts peerages would be out
of business, as they don't confine themselves to details that are returned
on their questionnaires; they ask for (and often get) information about
collaterals who have not even been contacted individually.
Paul Theroff (amongst others) keeps a database up-to-date with births,
deaths and marriages that are gleaned from all sorts of print & other media,
not from private communication with the subjects.

Maybe they just don't all think they have to change their minds because some
arrogant person sent them an e-mail. Or maybe they aren't even still
working on it. I don't update my web sites every time someone sends me a
snotty e-mail. And if someone puts a post-it on my worldconnect database,
I remove it, and send THEM a snotty e-mail.

Re: Experts Who Will Not Correct Errors...
Dear Dora,
Perhaps I am lucky, the people who sent me corrections don't behave in an
arrogant fashion. If they would, I would look at what they say, not how, the
"message" is the most important aspect. I cannot amend directly my website,
there is a lengthy process required and so we do it roughly once a month.
With best wishes
