Mediaeval Norfolk & Suffolk

I am just back from a couple of days in East Anglia.

In addition to seeing a wonderful display of mediaeval wall-paintings
at North Cove and Hales, I have photos of the following monuments of
genealogical import:

(1) The Shelton tombs and windows at Shelton, Norfolk.

These are particularly interesting, as they include 16th century
likenesses in stained glass of Sir Ralph Shelton (d 1499) and his son
Sir John and his husband Anne Boleyn, aunt of the Queen of the same
name; the figures are shown in full colour, kneeling, and wear
heraldic surcoats and cloaks. There is much heraldic glass in the
windows.

(2) the tomb at Blythburgh of John Hopton (died 1478) and his wives
Margaret (died 1452) and Thomasine (died 1497). NB There are no
effigies on this tomb, the brasses having been stripped.

(3) The Suckling heraldic glass at Barsham, dated 1586 and indicating
some of the early alliances of this family (Horatio Nelson's mother
was a Suckling, from whom he derived a descent from Edward I).

There is also an early 14th century brass of a knight at Barsham, near
to a later tomb to the Echingham family; it has been tentatively
assigned to Sir Robert atte Tye (died 1415) in the Guide Book,
although this is far from certain.

I am happy to forward copies to anyone who might be interested in
these.

Regards, Michael
