The Briggs family that in the late 16th-century settled in Old Malton,
a manor in the Ryedale district of the North Riding of Yorkshire, was
originally out of Kirkby Kendall in Westmorland. Robert Briggs, son
of Miles Briggs of Kirkby, married Elizabeth, daughter of James
Bellingham of Garthorn Hall, a younger brother of the Bellinghams of
Levens. By her he had his son and heir Francis Briggs. Exactly when
Robert Briggs moved to Old Malton is not certain, but he achieved a
position of some local authority, and became a justice of the peace
for the North Riding. It was no doubt his rising influence that
allowed Robert to arrange, in about 1590, a marriage for his son with
Mary Wyvill, a daughter of Sir Marmaduke Wyvill of Constable Burton.
Wyvill was the head of one of the top gentry families in
Richmondshire, served as a M.P., and would go on to be created a
Baronet. The match with the Briggs heir is an example of the ties the
Wyvills had with Westmorland, others being the fact that Sir
Marmaduke's other daughter was married into one of that county's
gentry, and the grandfather of Sir Marmaduke had taken a widow of the
Bellingham family for his second wife.

The marriage of Francis Briggs to Mary Wyvill was short-lived. They
produced two daughters, Anne and Frances, before Francis's untimely
death, which occurred before 1599, the year his widow Mary obtained
license to wed her second husband, Thomas Percehay of Ryton. Robert
Briggs lived on to at least 1612 (he's the informant in the family's
Visitation pedigree from that year), and oversaw the marriages of his
two young granddaughters and co-heiresses. The manor of Old Malton
was under the lordship of the Lords Eure, and Robert made sure to
marry his granddaughters to members of the county Durham family of
Blakiston, closely related to the Eures. The younger granddaughter
Frances Briggs was married at Sedgefield, Durham on 3 October 1611 to
Toby Blakiston (d. 1646), who later was seated at Newton Hall in that
county. Her elder sister Anne Briggs was married a few months
previous, at Old Malton on 8 August 1611, to Toby's first cousin,
William Blakiston (d. 1628), and they inherited Old Malton at the
death of her grandfather Robert Briggs.

Anne Briggs and William Blakiston of Old Malton had four children who
survived to adulthood: Elizabeth Blakiston (baptized at St. Giles,
Durham 27 December 1613), who married Christopher Copperthwaite of
Brignall; Catherine Blakiston (baptized at St. Giles 10 October 1617),
who married George Fenwick of Newcastle; Mary Blakiston, who married
Lynley Paget of York; and son and heir William Blakiston, who was born
1621. Young William Blakiston joined the Royalist forces during the
English Civil Wars, and became a Colonel. He married, about 1650,
Mary (baptized at Houghton 30 August 1615; buried 22 February 1664),
widow of Henry Simpson of Piddington, Durham, and daughter of Sir
William Belasyse of Morton House. Their only child, Anne Blakiston,
died in infancy. After his marriage, William Blakiston made his
residence at Piddington Hall, and became prominent in county Durham
affairs, being appointed a justice of the peace, serving as mayor of
Durham, and representing that city in Parliament in 1679-1680. He
died on 1 January 1685, and was buried the following day at St.
Oswald's, Durham. Both he and his wife were descended from Edward III
