Mediaeval Herefordshire: Mortimer and other tombs at Much Ma

Legg inn av Gjest » 27 aug 2007 20:24:35

I visited Much Marcle in the Herefordshire borders this morning and
photographed the following tombs, each of which is surmounted by an
effigy (except the last, which is a brass):

(1) Blanche Mortimer, died 1347, daughter of Roger Mortimer, 1st Earl
of March, and wife of Sir Peter Grandison. The tmb also features some
impressive original heraldry.

(2) Walter de Helyon, ff 1357; this is a wooden effigy which was fully
restored and recoloured in 1972

(3) believed to be Hugh, Lord Audley (died 1325) and his wife Isolda
Mortimer (sister of Roger, Earl of March)

(4) Sir John Kyrle (1568-1650) and his wife Sybil nee Scudamore

(5) Elizabeth Kyrle nee Boughton (c1576-1623), a wall brass.

I am happy to forward copies to anyone interested.

Regards, Michael

The exact date when Hugh died is, I believe, unknown.

He was living Nov 1325, and he was dead by Mar 1326
"probably while a prisoner ; in Wallingford Castle; evidently attainted"
