Church of "The Olives"

Legg inn av Leo van de Pas » 23 aug 2007 22:32:24

I am looking at the Bayard family (linked to Peter Stuyvesant) and by a father (Nicholas Bayard) and his son (Lazare Bayard) I find recorded that they belonged to the Church of "The Olives". Pardon my ignorance-------I have never heard of this church before. Does anyone know about this?
After the next update I hope to have more on the descendants of the Bayards and Stuyvesants.
With many thanks

There is some about this church in an article on the Bayard family by
William J. Hoffman in The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record,
vol 65, no. 4 (Oct 1934), pp 345-349. On p. 347, he writes, in part:

"After having spent several years in England, Nicholas Bayard was appointed
in 1589 as a minister in the field with the Dutch troops, probably with the Walloon
regiments. Two years later, in 1592, he received his appointment as a minister
with the _"Vlaamsche Kruisgemeente, de Olijfboom"_. The name of this "Flemish
Congregation under the Cross, or the church of the olive tree" was meant as a
symbolism of its oppression by the Spanish authorities. (_Bijbelshe-Kerkelijk
Woordenboek: de Kerk_ Biblical and Church Encyclopedea)."

There is some more about this church. Then he says that in 1594, Nicholas
was appointed minister at the Walloon church in Zierikzee in Zeeland and stayed
there until his death.
