Daneys of Tickencote

After a stop at Oakham Castle to see the collection of ceremonial
horse-shoes - including that attributed to Edward IV - I visited
Tickenham, in the far eastern corner of Rutland. This was formerly
the seat of the Daneys family.

It ranks as one of the best preserved Norman churches in England, and
contains an extraordinary chancel arch with no fewer than six
different bands of carvings - kings, queens, monks, animals, foliages,
monsters etc, including one band just of long-beaked birds' heads!

In the sanctuary there is a canopied tomb that contains a remarkable
wooden effigy of a knight, thought to be Sir Roland Daneys, MP, who
died in 1362.

Copies of photos available on request!

Cheers, Michael
