Sir Lawrence Pabenham of Offord Darcy

Legg inn av Gjest » 23 aug 2007 19:26:31

I managed to obtain the key to the church at Offord Darcy this morning
(third time lucky!) and have now seen the monumental brasses for Sir
Lawrence Pabenham (d 1399) and his two wives: (1) Elizabeth Engaine,
died 1377, and (2) Joan Daubeney.

Through his daughter Katherine's two marriages - firstly to Sir
William Cheney, and secondly to Sir Thomas Aylesbury, Sir Lawrence had
a number of descendants living, including Queen Elizabeth II.

If anyone would like photographs of these brasses, I would be happy to
forward them.

Kind regards, Michael

Recte: the brass states he died 10 June 1400.

You were right the frst time, Michael. The writ for Lawrence
Pabenham's IPM [CIPM XVII, no. 1234] is dated 16 June 22 Richard II
(i.e. 1399). The inquisition states that he died "Tuesday before St
Barnabas 22 Richard II" I would guess the inscription on the brass was
made some time after his death.

I'd love to see the photos, please.

Cheers

Rosie

Many thanks, Rosie.

By a timely coincidence, I was speaking to an acquaintance from a
nearby village just last night. I mentioned that a few years ago I
had transcribed the monumental inscriptions in the village
churchyard. He noted that anyone attempting to rely on the dates on
his mother's headstone would be confused, because when they gave
instructions to the mason some time after her death, they mis-
remembered the year as 1987, and only checked to find it was 1988
after the stone had been carved.

These things happen!

Cheers, Michael
