Huttons of Dry Drayton (snippet for Hap Sutcliff)

While looking for something else, I came across a snippet which adds
some information about the early Huttons of Dry Drayton, ancestral to
the St Georges of Hatley St George.

In his will (PCC Prob 11/13) John Hutton, the father of Thomas Hutton
of Dry Drayton and grandfather of Rose St George nee Hutton, states
that he wishes to be buried in the Greyfriars church, next to his
brother James. The will was proved 1 December 1501.

I had assumed that this was the Greyfriars in Cambridge.

However, in the Titulus Monumentis of Greyfriars, London, we find the
following entry:

"Sub labide jacet Jacobus Hutton, legum doctor et aduocatus curie
Cantuar de Archibus: qui obiit 7 die Mensis Augusti Ao dno 1490"

ie

"Beneath this stone lies James Hutton, doctor of laws and advocate of
the Archbishop's court of Canterbury, who died the 7th of August
1490".

This gives some further details about the likely last resting place of
John Hutton, and the career of his brother James. A third brother,
Thomas, also had a successful clerical career, rising to become
Archdeacon of Lincoln.

PS Alumni Cant. adds that he was Bachelor of Civil Laws, 1476-7, DCL
1481/2, Vicar of Linton, Cambs, from 1487, and died 1490.
