possible further details of the Wroth family of London and Middlesex.
The draft pedigree discussed here previously is:
1. John Wroth, MP; father of:
2. Ald. John Wroth, MP; Lord Mayor in 1360; married firstly (unknown);
married secondly 1352 Margaret Enfield; father of:
3. John Wroth, MP, died 1375; married firstly (unknown); married
secondly by 1353 Matilda Durrant; father of:
4. John Wroth, MP, died 1396; married Margaret, heiress of the
Buckland family; father of:
5a. Sir John Wroth, MP, born circa 1366; died 1407; married Margaret
Wellington.
5b. Agnes Wroth, married Sir Payn Tibetot, MP, died circa 1413. Their
son was the eventual heir of the Wroths, and is an ancestor of Queen
Elizabeth II.
From the Feet of Fines:
(a) 5 Edward III [c1331]: Richard de Wyllehale, and John Wroth and
Joan his wife: premises in Edmonton
(b) 22 Edward III [c1348]: John Wroth, fishmonger, and John Wroth and
Joan his wife: land in Enfield
(c) 29 Edward III [c1355]: John Wroth the elder, and Roger Bixley and
Juliana his wife: premises in Tottenham and Edmonton
(d) 33 Edward III [c1359]: John Wroth the elder, citizen of London
(e) 43 Edward III [c1369]: Francis de Enfield, and John Wroth the
elder and Margaret his wife and others: premises in Enfield and
Edmonton
(f) 46 Edward III [c1372]: Robert and Richard Dyneleye, and John Wroth
the younger and Matilda his wife: premises in Enfield.
Clearly, John the elder and Margaret in fine (e) are to be identified
with the couple at generation 2 above.
And John the younger and Matilda in fine (f) are to be identified with
the couple at generation 3 above.
Perhaps the Joan, wife of John Wroth (ff 1331-1348) named in the fines
(a) and (b) is the otherwise unknown first wife of John the younger.
Given the reference from 1346-7 to John Wroth of London and his wife
Juliana, who may be the first wife of Ald. John Wroth, it is possible
that fine (c) represents some sort of marriage settlement for a
daughter Juliana in 1355 - but this is pure speculation. I also
wonder whether fine (a) could be part of a marriage settlement.
Does anyone know how frequent an instance this is amongst fines of
this type?
