Bigod/Greystoke Marriage in 1433

Legg inn av Brad Verity » 21 aug 2007 00:54:37

In early 1433, dispensation was granted for Ralph Bigod and Anne
Greystoke to wed, they being twice related in the 4th degree. Which
means that two of his great-grandparents were siblings (independently)
to two of her great-grandparents. Though all of Anne's great-
grandparents are accounted for, three of Ralph's are not.

Ralph Bigod of Settrington - Ancestors:
1. Sir John Bigod of Settrington
2. Constance de Mauley

3. John Bigod of Settrington
4. Amy ----------
5. Piers de Mauley VII
6. Margery Hutton

7. Sir Roger Bigod of Settrington
8. Joan -------------
9. ---------------
10. -------------
11. Piers de Mauley VI
12. Elizabeth Meinell
13. Sir Thomas Sutton of Bransholme Castle
14. Agnes Hotham

Agnes Greystoke - Ancestors:
1. John, 4th Lord Greystoke
2. Elizabeth Ferrers of Wemme

3. Ralph, 3rd Lord Greystoke
4. Catherine Clifford
5. Robert Ferrers of Wemme
6. Joan Beaufort

7. William, 2nd Lord Greystoke
8. Joan Fitzhugh
9. Roger, 5th Lord Clifford
10. Maud Beauchamp
11. Robert, Lord Ferrrers of Wemme
12. Elizabeth Botiler
13. John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster
14. Catherine Roet

Since none of Anne Greystoke's great-grandparents were siblings to the
5 known great-grandparents of Ralph Bigod, it has to be 2 of his
missing 3 who were siblings to 2 of her 8.

Of all 16 of the couple's combined great-grandparents, only 2 of them
(John of Gaunt & Catherine Roet) fall into the scope of my Edward I
project, but I'd still like to know how Ralph and Anne were related.
Has there been any further research to clear this up?

Thanks and Cheers, --------Brad

You might ask Paul Reed, who (I think) looked closely at the Bigods of
Settrington some years ago but I don't remember discussing this marriage
dispensation with him.

I'm pricking up my ears here, because William Wentworth of New Hampshire
descends (via Calverley) from a sister of no. 1 on the Settington AT,
hence from blanks 8, 9 & 10 above. Matching siblings of any two of
Agnes Greystoke's great-grandparents would result in additional
noble--and likely more recent royal--ancestry for Wentworth than is
currently known.
