Best Free Genealogy Program???

Legg inn av Rebecca » 19 aug 2007 16:31:25

If I may be so bold as to break into the never ending pissing contests
and the misguided and irrelevant comments on ones personal sexual
orientation... I have a question:

Can anyone recommend a reliable, user-friendly free genealogy program
on line?

I sent a post about this yesterday and see that it hasn't shown up yet
so I'm trying again.

Dear Rebecca,

It is difficult to reccomend a program ignoring what you expect to do
with it, and let me adise you that free gifts tend to become
expensive.

Making user-friendly as the key word I would reccomend you to try PAF,
My Heritage.com or GenePro (I have only tried Beta2 version).
Making reliable the key word, again PAF and GeneWeb.

I know PAF has severe limitations but for a beginner has all the basic
needs and much more, it is fast, never crashes, has by far the best
merge facility and can export your data in a "gedcom" file that almost
all other programs can read without errors (the contrary is not always
true).

And now, that I did my best to answer your question, please satisfy my
curiosities:

" ...If I may be so bold as to break into the never ending pissing
contests and the misguided and irrelevant comments on ones personal
sexual orientation......"

What could possibly be relevant comments on ones sexual orientation in
SGM?
Are "pissing contests" meant as only male or even if childish, are
also opened to females?

Best regards,
Francisco

I don't know if there are any free programs that will do what you
want. There are some very good low-cost programs, though. I use
RootsMagic; I have used PAF in the past, and I think it's probably
still okay, although I haven't seen it in the last year (my mother was
using it, but she's dead).

(As for the comments on sexual orientation: they're basically comment
spam, along with the MI5 posts. I wish the senders would be deleted or
banned.)

Don't try to be cheap by looking for a "Free Program" that you soon will be
dissatisfied with.

Roots Magic is your best bet. 3.2.4 is the current version.

They even give you a Free Trial.

Here are the details and the pricing:

Get the RootsMagic book through the mail and you're set to go.

I recommend Legacy at http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/. The basic
program is free, with a deluxe version available for $30. It is
updated frequently, support is swift, responsive, and helpful.

It is not a perfect program, but for medieval genealogy, one of its
major benefits is the ability to enter unlimited names for the same
person. For instance, I like to be able to see who the earls of Essex
were, the earls of Hereford, kings of England or France, or whatever.
I can enter those titles as last names for find them whenever I want.
As in:
Bohun, Humphrey V de, 1st Earl of Essex, 2nd Earl of Hereford
Essex, 1st Earl Humphrey V de Bohun
Hereford, 2nd Earl Humphrey V de Bohun

Or:
Arundel, 6th Earl John FitzAlan
FitzAlan, John, 6th Earl of Arundel

With the many different names that genealogists prefer to use, I find
it invaluable to have all the possibilities in my index,

Check it out. It is powerful and the basic free version is amazing.

Hello Francisco...

What could possibly be relevant comments on ones sexual orientation in SGM?

LOL -- Good point!!

Are "pissing contests" meant as only male or even if childish, are also opened to females?

At least on this list, it does seem to be largely a male game based on
the "piss for distance" contests popular with little boys and nearly
impossible, biologically, for girls. (Please... let's not go into
this any further. LOL.)

On a more serious note: Thank you for your conciencious response to
my query. It was very helpful.

Which features does Legacy lack that are in RootsMagic?

I really do not know. I mirgrated from Family Tree Maker, which had

and may still have an excellent charting module, to Legacy because of
Legacy's ease of use, incredible support and updating service, and
because I could include innumerable alternate names and so be able to
immediately find the person being referred to on this list!

It was no contest! I still upgrade FTM simply to be able to access
the CDs they produce.

Thank you.

I migrated from Family Origins to RootsMagic.

I've played with demo versions of other programs and friends' setups.
