Mediaeval Gloucestershire: The Berkeleys of Berkeley Castle

Legg inn av Gjest » 17 aug 2007 19:33:51

Today I visited Gloucestershire, and called in to Berkeley Castle,
seat of the Berkeley family for the past 900 years and more.

I have photographs taken in the church of the tombs of:

(1) Sir Thomas Berkeley, called "the Rich", died 1361 and his second
wife, Katherine Clivedon Veel, died 1385. Thomas was the gaoler of
King Edward II, in whose custody he was apparently murdered in 1327.
Their tomb bears both their effigies, made of alabaster, and has
various depictions of the Berkeley arms.

(2) James Berkeley, 1st Lord Berkeley [of the second creation] (died
1463), and his second son, James, killed as a young man in France.
This tomb bears their effigies, side by side, curiously now behind a
glass panel which separates the Berkeley chapel from the chancel.

(3) Henry Berkeley (1534-1613) and his wife Katherine Howard (died
1596), daughter of Henry, Earl of Surrey.

I also went to Wotton-sub-Edge, and photographed the tomb of Thomas
Berkeley, 5th Lord Berkeley (1352-1417) and his wife Margaret de Lisle
(died 1392).

If anyone would like copies, I would be happy to forward them.

Regards, Michael
