WELLESBOURNE & WIDMER, of Hughenden

The WELLESBOURNE family appear in 15th century subsidy rolls for Hughenden,
Buckinghamshire. John WELLESBOURNE owned "Rockhals", a substantial moated
property at Hughenden. By his will (probate 1522) "Rockhals" was left to
his wife, Joan WELLESBOURNE, for the rest of her life, after which it was to
return to the next heir. It is not clear who the next heir was. They had a
daughter, Ann Bartlett.

By 1566/7 "Rockhals" was in the possession of Thomas WIDMER, who at that
time settled the "Rockhals" estate on his son, Thomas. In fact, Thomas
WIDMER may have owned the property since before 1524, as he was assessed for
£30 at Hughenden in the subsidy of that year, while the name WELLESBOURNE
does not appear. Thomas the elder married Lucy Chalfont. Thomas the
younger married Anne Grant.

I would like to know how "Rockhals" made the transition from WELLESBOURNE to
WIDMER. Also, if anyone can throw other light on the above, I would be
interested.
