A subscriber (July 2003) questioned the relationship
of the Lacy, Buckley, and Towneley families.

Phil Moody in response astutely mentioned the
possibility that Roger Lacey's daughter, who married
Geoffrey (Buckley) (s) Robert Dean of Whalley, could
be identified by tracing charters of her brother John
Lacy, and sister Albrida and husband Henry Byset.

However no subscriber provided any further information
regarding the Buckley and Towneley families.

Public records show the relationship of the following
families:

(1) Gospatric of Samlesbury AND Geoffrey (The Elder)
Dean of Whalley (s) Henry.

(2) Roger Lacy Constable Chester AND Geoffrey (The
Elder) Dean of Whalley (s) Henry.

(3) Roger Lacy Constable Chester AND Geoffrey (The
Younger) Dean of Whalley (s) Robert.

(4) Geoffrey (The Younger) Dean of Whalley (s) Robert
AND his son Richard of Towneley.

(5) Richard of Towneley (s) Geoffrey (The Younger)
Dean of Whalley AND Towneley descendants.

1177: Robert de Lacy (son/brother Henry) succeeded to
the Pontefract estates. Died 1191. No children as
heirs. Bequeathed estate properties to his sister
Albrida Lisours.

1180/85: Geoffrey (The Elder) Buckley Dean of Whalley
1193-1215 (s) Henry Dean of Whalley married a daughter
of Gospatric de Samlesbury.

1193: Roger de Lacy (Constable of Chester, Baron of
Halton) succeeded to the Lacy estates bequeathed to
him by his grandmother Albrina Lisours (sister of
Robert de Lacy). Roger de Lacy adopted the Lacy name.

1190/1200: Geoffrey (The Elder) Dean of Whalley
charter granted land of church of Whalley to Uctredo
Samlesbury (s) Gospatric de Samlesbury. Uctred was
brother to Geoffrey's wife.Witness: Roger, Richard,
and Alan Samlesbury (sons of Gospatric Samlesbury)

1190/1200: Roger Lacy (Constable Chester) confirms
Geoffrey's grant of property of church Whalley to
Uctredo Samlesbury. Witness: Roger, Richard, Alan
Samlesbury (sons of Gospatric Samlesbury)

1190/1200: Geoffrey Bishop of Coventry ditto
Witness: Geoffrey (The Elder) Buckley Daan of Whalley.

1180/1211: Charter of Roger Lacy granting church
Rochdale to Stanlaw Abbey, and further stipulates:

(1) The grant is not to take place until the death of
Geoffrey (The Elder) Dean of Whalley.

(2) Geoffrey (The Elder) was Dean of Whalley before
the death of Robert de Lacy (before 1193)

1215 Geoffrey (The Elder) Dean of Whalley died

1190/95 - probably 1200/1211: Geoffrey (The Younger)
Buckley Dean of Whalley (1215-1230) (son) Robert
married daughter of Roger de Lacy Constable of
Chester, the Honor of Potefract, and wife Maud de
Clare.
Children: Roger - last Dean of Whalley (1230-1235)
Richard - a quo Towneley of Towneley.
Robert
Henry de Whalley.

Note: BURNLEY (burneley.gov.uk/towneley states that
the first designated Towneley was the above Richard.

1200: King John granted land of "Towneley" (The field
belonged to TUNI) to Roger de Lacy.

1200/1211: Roger de Lacy granted the vil Tunaley,
manor of Calcoate, and land in Snodworth to Geoffrey
(The Younger) Buckley (s) Robert Dean of Whalley.
Details of the gift included:

2 Bovat land in Tunlea (say 30A) for a hunting lodge
and the right to pasture.
At Brunleia (Burnley) a large area was granted at
Cleviger where Geoffrey (The Younger) could hunt
unhindered.
4 Bovat (say 60A) at Calcoats where hunting dogs could
be kept.
2 Bovat (say 30A) at Somersworth for cattle.

The last two properties were located close to Whalley.

In return Geoffrey (The Younger) Dean of Whalley
tendered service due 1/10th knight fee.

Note: The concessions of allowing Geoffrey's hunting
rights was highly prised by his descendants. There was
some discord when Nicholas (son) Richard Towneley
died. His three sisters squabbled about the
inheritance, and sued for share of the property (1315)

1211: John de Lacy (son) Roger de Lacy succeeded to
the Pontefract estates. Died 1240.

1240: Edward de Lacy (son) John de Lacy succeeded to
the Potefract estates. Died 1258.

Sincerely Yours,

Paul Bulkley
